14 members online - only 2 genuine

Dont give in to the Dicks

Hope Haynes can get on top of this when the super mod returns from hols. Its starting to get ridiculous, lets not give in to these bunch of tossers. I keep seeing Ash logged in trying to keep on top of deleting the spam but i'm sure he cant go on indefinitely - would be a big shame to loose the forum, just frightened Haynes may consider pulling the plug on it.

Keep fighting.........AndyH

I hope so too, just had a quick look and there were 10 new ones registering just now  All had similar random usernames

AshG 22nd November 2012 05:07 PM

At least tt and I only have to keep on top of one section now. It was hell before that

rpjg1975 22nd November 2012 05:12 PM

true, from the look of the posts this afternoon it certainly stops you getting bored!!! :D

as has been posted in the 'too easy' thread, up to over 1400 active members from 200 and something in october......thats a lot of 'dicks'!

Can you not put in security so that any new member has to first get authority from Ash or another other admin before they can do anything?

I'm no expert at forum protocol John but that sounds the easiest solution, would cause a lot of work though for the moderators in the mean time but should stop it. Plus once the spammers know that there is an approval process they would move on to the next victim. Maybe the forum software would need updating, TT is an knowledgeable in this field so maybe he would know.

I think everyone muchly appreciates everything your doing Ash & TT, as we've said before it must be a reall ballache to have to keep cleaning the trash up.

It does make you wonder if any top brass at Haynes are aware of what's happening with the forum that bearing their name or if the trail stops on a beach somewhere with pina colada in its hand

It needs someone with admin rights to enable this and possibly also a software upgrade, unfortunately the admin dude's on holiday.

vmax1974 22nd November 2012 06:12 PM

If haynes pulled the plug I for one would suffer withdrawl symptoms lets not let that happen

John.W 22nd November 2012 06:13 PM

I did the admin for the Rally x web page a couple of years ago and every new user had to register first and then wait for email confirmation before they could post. I believe it's the same on the locost web page.

John.W 22nd November 2012 06:28 PM

The speed that these new posts are appearing it looks like they are computer generated

flyerncle 22nd November 2012 06:53 PM

Shame they cant get sent a nice virus. R Soles

They are BOTS

TT

Dualist 22nd November 2012 10:11 PM

We did have pre-warning from a guy asking where he could download a bit of software that was a spam bot program and it all went pete tong from there.

There is a bot that is on the vb forums to combat this sort of attack but admin would have to install it, software is years out of date which isn't helping so manual checks is the only safe way atm. There are plenty of IP checkers out there to help with any banned IPs.

Short for robot I believe, artificial. Automatically creating these nuisance accounts and crappy usernames. I prefer the ones attached to the ladies !

twinturbo 22nd November 2012 11:02 PM

Yes it's short for ROBOT. Been arround for a decade..

some good, some bad, some indiffrent..

the web is richer, the same , poorer for them

It's a bit of code written to go off and do somting on its own..

in this case it will run round the internet looking for vBulletin forums

once it finds a vB forum it will pass that back to another bot

that bot will then see if it can create a user account.

if it does it will pass that to a spam bot and the spam bot will start creating random accounts and post up pre-defined posts.

it's crude, but given the speed of the internet and computers it can get results relativly quickly..

if countermeasures such as e-mail verification are implemented then an advanced bot will sort that..

TT

The V8 Files 22nd November 2012 11:18 PM

TT or Ash, do you know when this guy is back from hols, I know you must be totally frustrated with the question/suggestion as well as dealing with the spammy fritters, but the current situation does seem to be having a negative effect on the site, there seems a declining number of genuine posts on a daily basis.

I'm trying to fill it up a bit with my rubbish but I think peeps are bored with that as well :(

AshG 23rd November 2012 01:44 PM

should be back on the 26th i believe but i reckon it will take a bit of time when he is back to come up with a solution.

Thanks Ash for the update, understandably it will take a little time to implement the appropriate upgrades/solutions.

robo 24th November 2012 12:26 PM

Dont worry things have got much better. We now have 5 genuine members out of 16:rolleyes:
