Dashboard foam
 

What's the best foam to pad the dash and interior panels behind vinyl or lethearette.:confused:
Also what adhesive would you use to bond the foam to ally or card panels?:)

I used some underlay stuff I had left over from laying a laminate floor:o

Seems to work ok. I didnt fix it all over but just tacked it near the edge with some clear silicone .folded the material over then tacked the back with a staple gun.

I used a couple of camping mats to pad my dash.
For the interior panels I glued scrim foam (foam with a thin fabric backing) to the back of the vinyl using a can of spray contact adhesive.

I'll second the camping mat. 3 quid from morrisons and also used spray adhesive on the mdf and laid the foam over..not forgetting to roll the foam over the bottom edge and fix to rear to eliminate the need for a radius as it will be a soft edge.

Remember not to glue the leatherette on the front surface or it will cause problems, just stretch and staple to the the back of the dash :D

What happens if you glue the lethearette to the front dash foam?
I you was supposed to glue everything. I've seen on telly where they spray adhesive on everything.:eek:

It goes rippley and bubbly as the material stretches and shrinks:mad:

I remembered it from that mark evans show "a kit car is born' when he made the cobra replica. Actually watched it on youtube before I did mine :)

I used 5L of impact adhesive from tins, the spray stuff is weak

Thats a neat dash Snapper and also a fine looking bonnet. How did you do the louvres ?

The dash was yoga mat, drian pipe for the radius and vynll over used tins of evostick
The reason I come on this site apart from the good info is that I want to replace the rear Sierra setup with a Haynes version
The mechanics and electrics are pretty generic for all kit cars and trim is a personal preference, my kit lends itself to the more retro look so windscreen carpets etc

My dashboard flew through the IVA with no foam. You don't need foam if its radiused. I have 12mm MDF, ran a router around the edges to give the 6mm radius, then stuck some pipe on the bottom edge (40mm diameter) to give my 19mm radius. Personally I think foaming is tricky to give a good finish. Looks bubbly and uneven.

I could do with recovering my dash as it has a couple of battle scars where the dash mounted tax disk holder used to be on the passenger side. Its also an opportunity to change from black to red.

Theres a variety of leatherette available on Ebay, what have people found is the best stuff for dashboards, canvas backed or cotton backed, normal or extra thick ?
