Gents

Well, after an interesting and frustrating day, I failed the first attempted at the IVA, but surprising, not on the items I was concern about.

If was a real shame, that on the day, the car decided to overheat, thus suspending the following tests:

02B - Metered Emissions
05 - Steering Effort
08 - In-Direct Vision (although I snapped off the interior mirror in transit - Woops)
25 - Headlamps

Luckily, the inspector advised that he had no concerns over these items and would look at them on the re-test.

However on a positive

The only real items I failed on are:

Side repeaters not on rear arches - kind of new this but took a chance!
Exterior projections on exhaust mount - radius to be filed onto exhaust can mount
Protective steering - minor alteration required (although modified during the test and passed)
Front Flexi brake hoses to be clipped to upper wishbone
Master cylinder copper brake pipe kinked / flattened to front wheel
Fuel tank not full of fuel preventing the calculations to be completed on the brake tests due to not having the correct weight (However he said the brakes over performed and had not seen such good results!)

There where generally a few bits he was not keen on, but passed with advice on the rules

Remove Tax disc holder
LSD Diff made knocking noise on brake testing- he said I may need to consider changing for standard type but this was only advise

will_08 9th April 2013 05:59 PM

Unlucky spike, you'll still be on the road for summer?

whats the waiting time on the re-inspection?

ayjay 9th April 2013 06:08 PM

Tough Spike--so near yet so far.
Whats the score on re test -do you need to pay more for it?

Also what that about repeaters on rear arches?

twinturbo 9th April 2013 06:40 PM

Yeah the repeater, I noticed Jason had these on the wings, is it the preferred location?

I recon you can get that all sorted quickly ;)

Hey twin, i'm in Lancs and i go to Scotland once a week. Can i come and see your build some time?

I always stop at the Tesco on the M6 for fuel its very handy!!! ;)

Spikehaus 9th April 2013 07:03 PM

The retest is only £90, he reckons about 2 - 3 weeks notice is required. Aiming for 6 weeks to completed and get it passed!

flyerncle 9th April 2013 07:23 PM

All the best Nick.;)

Yeah sure, detour past Morrisons for petrol and you will pass right by me ;)

I thought you could do a retest within 2 weeks for less than 90? Has that changed?

Their function is to notify the driver driving parallel to you to the left or to the right of you. So the further forward, the better. Caterham and Westfield position their side repeaters on front wings now. The position on the front of rear arches passes the formal requirements, but only just, and it is not really rational, as the repeaters then are closer to the rear indicators than the front of the car. I put mine in on the sides of the scuttle, but then I will not have to pass the British IVA. Fingers crossed!

SeriesLandy 9th April 2013 10:06 PM

Well done, not a bad fail

What do you need to do here 'Front Flexi brake hoses to be clipped to upper wishbone'? Is that to prevent rubbing?

jason 10th April 2013 08:41 AM

Hi Spike.

Thats not a bad list at all. I see somebody else noticed i had put the side repeaters on the rear wings. My inspector didn't really like them there but as they were the right distance from the front of the car they passed. I got mine from CBS.

Mine also over heated at the test but he kept going anyway, in fact we did most of the test with the bonnet off to help with the cooling.

I was going to PM you today to see what you had done about your cooling system. I have a definite issue with mine. Fine whilst you are moving forward, but not when you stop at traffic lights. I think we might have to get our heads together on this one.

Good luck with the rest of it.

twinturbo 10th April 2013 09:19 PM

They can be a bit of a pain to bleed the Cologne Engines so you may have air locks.

May be worth venting the bonnet too.

i was n exeter test station the other day and the iva man about where to put my repeaters funny enough.
he said there was a haynes in a few days ago.

i was thinking it may have been you

my iva application is sent off and paid for im just waiting for a test date :)

Spikehaus 28th April 2013 10:54 AM

Just a quick update, after few Saturdays of tweaking and minor alterations, I have completed everything to keep the IVA Inspector happy including all the additional items that he mentioned in general conversation.

I have a re-test date of the 20th May 2013, so its just a matter of waiting it out a bit longer! I missed completion for Stoneleigh this year, but not sure I would want a 3.5 hour journey each was as a test run! :)

Have you got your date yet Baz, or is it a closely guarded secret?

twinturbo 28th April 2013 12:27 PM

Will be down in Dartmouth in the Half term week if you fancy a blast up ;)

yegh vosa are keeping it under thair hat at the mo :(

Spikehaus 30th April 2013 08:25 PM

Sure it will come soon Baz, mine was about 3-4 weeks before the letter came, then I had only 1 week before the date to prepare!

The good news for me is that the DVLA have now formerly registered my VIN Number and sent all the relevant forms and procedures. I will have them drafted out and in the post the second I get the IVA certificate!

Twin, if the car passes than that would be great, however half term does not mean much to me just yet!, so just let me know nearer the time when you are down.

twinturbo 30th April 2013 09:14 PM

l8 may bank holiday week.

Its finally re-test day - taken a day of work to get the car on the trailer and up to the test centre. My appointment is mid afternoon. Feel calm but was up early as could not settle! Luckily the IVA inspector is a really nice chap so kind of looking forward to it!:)

Dualist 20th May 2013 12:29 PM

Good luck dude :)

Spikehaus 20th May 2013 07:17 PM

Thanks for the support guys, well this is how it went. I passed everything on the list from the initial inspection with no problems, however the inspector noticed a small amount of brake fluid on the back of the brake master cylinder after the tests. On closer inspection it appears to be a faulty seal with the piston seals. This is 100% my fault for using a second hand component from Ebay! The most annoying thing is it passed all the roller brake tests.

So basically, I failed!

A new master cylinder and a couple of hours work to sort it.

robo 20th May 2013 07:38 PM

Does that require a full re test spike or is it just to check the brakes?

Bob

Spikehaus 20th May 2013 08:11 PM

Just an MOT Style brake test and a quick drive around the car park he said. Not to bad really, its just a bit annoying having to get the trailer again.

twinturbo 20th May 2013 08:52 PM

bugga....

Almost there.

jason 21st May 2013 08:33 AM

Bad luck Spike.
At least it is an easy thing to put right and hopefully they will fit you in quickly for a re-test.

AshG 21st May 2013 09:13 PM

insure it and drive there :-)
