The 'permanently marked on the chassis VIN' - pics please!

I've posted this over on LCB too - but thought i'd ask here too - after all EVERY Haynes builder has to sort this - some other kits come with VIN already attached to the chassis.

I'll take some pics of what i'm planning and post them - but pics of how everyone else has done it will be gratefully received - including (especially) anything that was failed at IVA inspection!

A strip of 25x3mm flat steel with number stamped into it and then welded into one of the frame rails on the front right hand side as per IVA regs,if its cut out and welded neatly and then ground back with a flap disc and painted it should look ok.

I remember reading that handy andy was going to put his vin number on the rail that crosses in front of the drivers seat. Do your think this will be ok to do as I'm running out of places to put mine. Everything is getting a bit cluttered now!!!

I have also been reading the iva manual today and cannot find the section that says weights are not required on the manufacturers plate. Is this still the case?

I was thinking of stamping mine into the top of CP16 or TR8 above CP16.

Right side of vehicle and not easily removeable or altered is what they are looking for,so for my money the top front rail above steering mount bush is favourite.

As in the pic above, remove a little of the ally scuttle panel and it will hide it nicely.

Can it not be added in a few places around the chassis, so if one happen to be removed then there are other originlas still in place.

I never did post what i'd done - there's a pic on here - basically it is an engraved plate welded onto the 3mm bulkhead above the pedal box:

I also put a similar plate in the floor of the car - but have no pic of that. It is attached between the rearmost chassis rail and the 3mm strips which i'm mounting my seat runners to...

Depends on the tester,if he wants to be a pain it could be knocked back as being easily removeable,it should be stamped into the main chassis rails and therefore not easily removed.

An easy retort: I *made* this whole chassis, any tube in it is as easily replaceable to me as this plate.

Two of three years ago someone on here got the number milled or punched in 3 mm plate, then cut out a part of a tube ant neatly welded the plate in, so it's not obvious the plate is not the tube wall.

During my Polish registration, the inspector just punched the VIN on top of TR5, the diagonal engine bay tube. He tapped each die lightly, so it's an iffy compromise with the tube bent a bit and the VIN barely legible.

I think it was Adrian H and yes it would be fairly easy to remove a tube and replace it but hardly practical if it was the main tube above pedal box.
