Very nice guys, congratulations, looks and sounds great

Will it be a road car, or track days only? What about making home-built kit cars road legal in Belgium? Is it as hard and almost impossible as it is in France? As I'm French, I'm quite curious about that.

Thanks!

Our intention is to make the car road legal. But we know it will be very difficult to get it through the technical inspection in Belgium. For now, the best option is to get it registered in the UK, import into Holland. And finally, import to Belgium. But we don't have experience with it, and not sure if this will work. Otherwise it will be a trackday car :D

Salutations

I have zero experience with the import/export. a starting point would be to see what "test" an imported car needs to have to be begium registered or if its just a paperwork exercise. if theres anything u need from the uk I am sure we'll all pool our brain cells to help u. whats registration like in holland? may not have to come to the uk first.

In Belgium, they just don't like kit cars, they would fail the car because of stupid things. (4 point harness, no windscreen, side exhaust exit, adjustable suspension, stiff suspension,... ) And it is not just paperwork.
But now there are some regulations changes (just read this yesterday): Every car which has been registered in another country (Also kit cars in the UK) can get a belgian registration without to much problems. This is a huge relief for kit car fans in Belgium :)
The step to get it registered in Holland, is just because it is easier to get a car registered from there than one from the UK. (With the new regulations this is not necessary)

well done Wim,

we're about at the same stage as you. See the pictures. And only some 60 km from one another. From the start, we've decided not to bring it on the road.
Can I offer you a vacuum formed dashboard ? And rear deck maybe ?
I've made a few before I felt happy but I only need one.

Eddy

It is a nice offer, but we will be making a Caterham style dash and rear deck.
Your build looks very tidy.

alga 21st January 2014 12:46 PM

Interesting! Do you have a design for the dashboard yet? The Caterham scuttle is much lower, there's lots more space on the Haynes dashboard.

There isn't a design yet, but will be doing that part of the build in the next couple of weeks. When there is one, we will be posting it up here.

Are the Caterham scuttles that much lower ? I thought they were at about 10" in height at the side of the dashboard. Not a lot of difference with the Haynes scuttle ?

alga 22nd January 2014 09:58 AM

Well, maybe it's not the scuttle, but the chassis which is lower.

Could be, I will do an investigation on that :D

Steering wheel that i got from a friend. A souvenir from his old Triumph Spitfire.:D

Wgroove 2nd March 2014 07:09 PM

Been working on the back of the car.

K4KEV 2nd March 2014 08:41 PM

well will you look at that ....even your back end is telling you your steering wheel is on the wrong side:eek:
nice work bud, keep on pluggin away

Wgroove 15th April 2014 05:03 PM

The rear is now fully installed. There is a dent in the alu in the right corner, but I don't think you will notice it when driving around.

Also started with making the dash. Maybe I'll make a mould of it first, to make a glass or carbon fibre one.

After almost 5 years of build...
The front arches need to be done, and some other things to, but we managed to get our car ready for a trackday last weekend.

Tis picture is for those who are still building:
DONT GIVE UP !!! ITS AN AMAZING FEELING WHEN YOU DRIVE YOUR HAYNES ROADSTER !!! :D :D :D

voucht 20th August 2014 07:12 PM

Congratulations for the car, it should be such a good feeling to drive it :) It looks very nice.
And good for you you drove it before doing the front wing stays, at least you had a moment of enjoyment before the hassle. I've been on my front wing stay for 3 days now, and still can't get them right
But hopefully, within one week, I'll have my first drive with a complete car too.
Keep on the good work, fellow left hand driver ;)

alga 21st August 2014 10:31 PM

Hm, I put mine together without too much bother, 2 or 4 hours on each, done on the first attempt. Hindsight: 3 mm upper strips are too weak the but 5 mm or so should do fine. Also, place them an inch or so above the tyre. I went for ~15 mm and now I cannot mount a tyre slightly larger than the one I measured with. Update: the upper one does all the flapping, but the bottom (rear) one breaks at the weld from torsional loads.
