Advice and suggestions please
Ok I an sitting here thinking about my next build and cant make my mind up on the spec
I would like it to be north of 250 to 300 horses but what engine could I get at a reasonable cost that would both fit and produce that kind of power May use mx5 front hub's and sierra rear end Would love some input from you lot Thanks |

Mine will be up there abouts, but then again nissans might be an acquired taste,
if you hang fire a few weeks I will give you a taste as I am sending off my reg application off today:D |

It has got to be honda s2000 hasn't it ? The v tech engine is a total beast, and they are amazingly tuneable. Nitrous, v tech timers, cams whatever. That engine is as strong as an ox, and an absolute peach when you let the old girl get to about 6500 7000 revs. If I had the money, this engine would be in my car without a doubt. :D

Seconded, S2000 has the best 4-pot motor ever. ~240 horses in factory tune out of a 2 litre atmospheric engine! VTEC cutoff at around 5500 rpm, and 8500 rpm redline!

I would totally agree with that motor BUT the most obvious down side is the cost which is highly prohibitive....it would be 4 figures at least, my engine so far has cost me £300 that includes a fresh bottom end rebuilt T28 turbo and supporting mods to stage 2.....all I am trying to say here is it does not have to cost a fortune to obtain 300 horses....well the hay might tho:D :D

Right, I've heard the drivetrain of an S2000 can be obtained for about £1500-2500.

£2500 would expect the rest of the car as well
i would love the s2000 motor but the cost rules it out the ethos is about building a sportscar on a budget doesn't help matters that the wifes car has just thrown its cam belt and clattered the valves and to add insult she is 300 miles away just cost me a small fortune to get her recovered to her brothers house |
I picked up my S2000 engine and box for 1250 but they typically go for between 2000 to 2500. If you wanted to n/a tune a zetec/duratec to 240 bhp it would cost a lot more. And you would still have use a type 9 or similar, which haven't got the best of gear changes.
I've never been in a turbo'd 7 but i imagine they're a hand full with all that torque. |
The guy in the next unit to me has four Nissan 200sx 1.8 engines the standard daily driver mild engine puts out about 180hp the one is his all singing all dancing drift car is pushing over 360hp with about £1000 worth of second hand parts spent on it.

The question I ask myself a lot when speccing things is 'why?'. And I always ask myself this before committing to something expensive.

I'm reigning the horses in on mine to a modest 350bhp for reasons of underware preservation. I expect the engine costs including the turbo, chargecooler and custom inlet manifold to come in under a grand, with a car attached. Plus the Saab engine management system can be fully remapped by an owner with the right software. |

Easy solution with regards to budget is to pick up a less than perfect s2000, sell all the bits you don't want and keep the bits you need. A lot of work but you should get what you want for less.

Type "9"s don't like to many horses due to layshaft only having tiny needle rollers in it.:eek:
