Steel - amount to order
 

Righty ho, boys (and girls? if we have any)

Bit of a slow morning at work, but I haven't got the book with me. I'm sure this was on the forum pre-hack, but;

How much steel do I need to order? Just for the actual chassis.

I think it is something like 42m of 25x25x1.5 ERW BOX

Also;

19x1.6 ERW round
19x19x1.5 ERW BOX
Aluminium sheets
Chequer plate (2mm) for the floor

How much did others order, and was it enough?

They will be full 6m lengths.

I already have;

Chassis plates
Roll bar (thanks AshG)
Wishbones
Rear uprights
Diff plates

PS - I will be overordering as I want to build up a little bit of stock for some other little projects

thats about right for the 25mm box erw, i ordered 4 lengths of the 19mm box but still have one left ,
not sure on the round tube as i used a Triton rear tub so didn,t need the tube.
as for ali sheets, depends if you are making your own side panels,bonnet & rear tub? but for the floor & cockpit panels i ordered 2 x 8ftx4ft sheets.

My bodywork is going to be a bit of a mix, and I have a little bit of an idea that I might try.

I'll get a couple of lengths of 19mm tube, I'm sure I can find a use for anything that's left over. I may not even need it yet:rolleyes: all depends what I do for the back end

1" Gas Water Pipe (33.4 OD) - 1 length (rear stays for roll bar)
40x40x5 EA - 2 lengths
25x3 Flat - 3 lengths
3 sheets aluminium (2.5x1.25m)
1 sheet 5 bar chequerplate, 2mm (2.5x1.25m)

£301 including the delivery and VAT.

There are a few bits there for other projects, hence over-ordering

Delivery is on Friday:D

Where did you order from? Trying to find some chequer plate, and you're quite near me.

I got the whole lot from ParkerSteel (Canterbury, Kent). Basically, I am busy at work and have an aversion to ringing round for quotes, then not getting calls back etc.

As I could order everything with Parkers online, and specify a delivery date (Friday, recovering from a wedding Thursday:rolleyes: ) I did.

Delivery was £25, and that includes having all the sheets put onto a pallet.

The price for the sheet was 51.72 + VAT.

Parkers can be funny about you collecting stuff though, probably with good reason, but it does smack of being a bit 'nannyish'.

Yeah, I use Parkers aswell, just couldn't find the chequer plate! They are a pain with their collection, but now my brother in law has a transit, not such a problem!

Product code for the sheet I ordered is 42-01-25

Does it say on your delivery note at all the total weight of the order?

Yeah, it was 0.21 tons (210kg) total.

The pallet was 40kg. It had;

2No. 2.5x1.25m 0.6mm aluminium sheet
1No. 2.5x1.25m 1.2mm aluminium sheet
1No. 2.5x1.25m 2mm 5 bar aluminium treadplate

The loose stuff was 170kg. I overordered on everything, as I have some other stuff to do with it, but it had;

2 lengths 40x40x5 Equal Angle
10 lengths 25x25x1.5 Sq. ERW
3 lengths 20x20x1.5 Sq. ERW
3 lengths 19x1.5 Round ERW
1 length 1" heavy gas pipe
3 lengths 25x3 flat

All lengths just over 6m

I need to figure out how much I can get on my roof bars. All the sheet stuff and the gas pipe can wait.

Now, they each have 75Kg max stamped on them so I just need to figure out if that's per roof bar or total.

If you are buying it from Parkers they might not let you take it away. See an earlier post in this thread.

I got the gas pipe for the rear roll bar supports.

Some suppliers will cut it into 3m lengths for you.

If you log in to the Parkers site, they give you the weights of the material you are looking at, usually in kg per metre or kg per square metre.

Failing that, there are calculators for metal weights available on the net

I can now see the weights on the Parkers PDF quote that they email which is good; I hadn't noticed it in the basket but it seems their site goes down every night about this time for some reason so will check later - thanks.

I'll be getting it delivered to a UK address and then hopefully bringing it back home to France so not collecting directly from them. It's just 3-4 time the price over here.

Fair enough. It doesn't all need to go on the roof rack though.

Some of it can be cut into smaller pieces (roughly to size) and placed inside a car, unless it's full of people.

Alternatively, HandyAndy is doing precut packs now, they would easily fit into a car (across the back seats) http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showp...2&postcount=39

Bit more expensive, but doing all of those cuts is time consuming

once a chassis kit is cut to the required lengths it does make it alot easier to transport compared to the 6m lengths it starts out as,
As Sean has said the cost of my flat pack chassis kits cost a little more than just buying the long lengths of steel but this is due to the time it takes to cut.

Generally 75Kg is about the maximum for any load on the roof, so I would assume that it means a total of 75Kg.

Funny, I recall the roof of my car taking two fully grown men without any problems when I was younger!
