Getting the car on the road
Ok chaps i think im a few weeks away from getting iva booked etc...i now this is a big statment and fact is im probley months away in reiality
so what im looking for is some input from folks about what i need to do so far i think the first step is to apply to the DVLA for a Vin number Insurance on vin plate IVA Road Tax DVLA inspection Get plates made Go drive An axpansion on these would be great/ put into the right order, probly got it wrong.. Tilly |
I am way off from sva, but I have also pondered the order of procedures required to registration and test. It would be great if someone could elaborate on the process, I have read the DVLA aren't really sure of the order though! Everytime I think of the registration proccess I get that blank expresion and think of something else like when I know i really should do my accounts.
A guide would be great. P.S Tilly are you going for an age related plate for I have been reading how hard it is to get a carbed engine through SVA. (Borrow a CAT and air bleeding ECU), Makes me wonder how much trouble it would be to use a megasquirt and some zx10 throttle bodies on mine. Chris |
Iv got a 02 injection engine with a CAT
Hope that will be ok It will end up on a Q im quite sure but that dosnt bother me Tilly |
This is the order I did it in:
Go for a drive ( On private road of course) Vin number, (Made it up) Go for another drive Book SVA. ( Now IVA) Insurance on vin plate Go for test drive before SVA. Pass SVA, Second attempt. Get DVLA inspection. Get Road tax Get Plates made. Go for long drive... Sorted ....:D |
Im a long way off that stage and the paperwork side of things
scares me #h*@less as me and paperwork dont mix at all, What exactly do you mean by Insurance on vin plate Dogwood i am abit of a thicko when it comes to stuff like this  Dale |
Dale,
The way I see it, stand to be corrected, is as you are taking the car for IVA/DVLA inspection it requires insuring. Most insurance companies won’t have a clue if you try to insure a car that has not been registered, however one of the specialist insurance companies will insure you before registration. To differentiate between your Roadster build and my Roadster build, should the unthinkable happen on the way to the IVA, they will require a unique chassis number (on the VIN(Vehicle Identification Number)plate) to ensure they are insuring the correct car. OK does that sound confusing or dose it answer the question? Cheers Ginge |
Not confusing at all Ginge,
I think ill be askin you a few more qustions when im ready for the legal stuff, Im probably worrying over nothing coz i know you will help us out (i hope) :D Cheers Ginge hope the burns not giving you too much hassle Dale |
Mate,
I’m no expert it’s just when I am at work I have a lot of time on my hands and can waste away days reading up on stuff. The burns are healing, my face is pealing and my arm is tightening up as the process takes hold, I should be back to full ‘work shop’ fitness in a week. |
What stage of the build can i apply for a vin number and what forms do i need to fill in to apply for one?
cheers matt |

Sorry, missed this question. Most "Kitcar" insurers will do a temp cover on the VIN number. About a month I think (Could be wrong). Once you have the car all registered, you phone up your insurers and tell them the Reg number. Joke is you can drive it to the IVA test, but you cant drive it to the DVLA inspection. HTH David |

As I have said before, I made mine up using birth date and build date. Some DVLA offices dont like you doing this and prefer to issue it. I think you just phone up, tell them what you want to do and they will advise you. David |
On the above post, I rang the local DVLA office (or what I thought was the local office)only to be put through to Swansea.
I asked about a VIN number for the kit car I am building, after a load of unhelpfull boll0cks the long and short of the story is that your local VLO should be able to issue you a VIN number if you apply in writing (as posted previously by others) and avoid Swansea like the plague as they are not clued up,best of luck. |

I did exactly the same, and got the same results. I ended going in person to my local office (Maidstone) Told them what I was doing, adn what number I wanted. They checked on their computerthingymagig, and said "YES" Nobody was more supprised than me.....:D But yes the way is to write to your local office and let them issue it. At least then you will be sure it's OK David |
HI
From my experience making up your own vin number is fine. BUT if you look like getting a Q plate it will need a VRO number. This number corresponds to the DVLA office that issued it. The story is a long one to why I no this. |
i just wrote to maidstone stating that i was building a kitcar and would like to get the ball rolling by them issuing a vin no. week later nice letter turns up with vin plus all the iva and dvla forms that i need.
was pretty painless tbh. if anyone wants i can send them a copy of the letter i wrote. |
