Build cost .... How much ??
How much has it cost or do you expect it to cost, building your Roadster !!??
I know this was touched on recently but thought a dedicated thread to the subject of, build cost, might prove usefull ;) Feeling a little wonky-donky after several days of hard graft in the workshop, been taking things easy for the last couple of days !!?? Bored .. Bored .. Bored  I sat down this morning to do the one job that I have been dreading .... How much has my build cost me so far ? Quite pleasantly surprised that the total so far, is not quite as bad as I had feared :) My build costs to date are £2,605.00 ( This includes the biggest single purchase that I am about to pay for ) Things left to buy/pay for ? 4 new tyres, Silencer, rear lighting, mirrors, new disks + pads + shoes Then there's the, " On the road costs " ..... Rolling road session ( Perhaps ) !!. IVA & Re-test fees & DVLA registration fees + Road tax & insurance Being optimistic I see the final cost in the region of £3,500 - £3,750 A fair way from my original target but .... Less than £4,000 on the road still seems like a bargain  |
I am looking at about 3.5K to an approved car.
But that's buying most of the welded stuff ( I realy can't be bothered with doing more welding after spending years restoring my Sierra ) and will be purchasing full GRP body. TT |
My original budget was between £3000 - £4000.:) So far I have spent £2000 ( 1300 on the car, 700 on tools and consumables). I have a complete chassis, wishbones, uprights etc, plus fibreglass parts. The frightening bit is the parts remaining, deep breath !!
Steering rack and clamps, all the aluminium, including rear tub, coilovers, wheels and tyres, propshaft, petrol tank and filler cap, exhaust and silencer, seats and belts, IVA and registration, tax and insurance, brake pipes, lights, mirrors, various nuts, bolts etc, plus parts that I must have forgotten. I reckon that lot will be at least another £2500. All in all not too bad.;) Time for a lie-down. Peter |
Like to think mine was in the £3k to £4k mark
Although think I may be kidding myself..:o |
Nice one guys :)
With a little luck .... Over time, this thread will give new builders an avereage build target to aim at ;) Ohhh, bother I forgot about the propshaft !!?? :o :D |
my car currently owes me £1900  :D
i have yet to buy .... prop = £130 approx ali for cockpit = £70 approx 4 new tyres = £130 seat runners = £45 so without getting a calculator out i reckon... £3200 on the road with Iva & 1 retest, car tax & insurance cheers andy |
Err don't honestly know and what's more I don't really want to. Having spent 6K last year to convert a 1997 Iveco daily into a motorhome plus a couple more K on Dentistry to transform my smile from a busted farm gate to George Clooney:D I've given up counting.
D. P.S. every penny spent last year was worth it:rolleyes: |
haha i think i might beat you andy yours looks like you still may have to spend a little more than you mention :D and you thought you were a tight git.
did a final official tally up excluding consumables and tools. £3080 + IVA £450 retest £90 Registration £50 6months tax £100 insurance £100. i make that £3870 on the road. i did get a few good deals though using the magazine influence but nothing that couldn't be got with a bit of haggling :D |
Quote:
my figure of £3200 INCLUDES the IVA fee, retest, tax & insurance :p :D even tho my car isn,t finished, i already have most parts needed to finish it apart from the bits i mentioned :) my rep of being a tight git remains intact :D cheers andy |
Okey it seems to I´m the one as has spent most money so far
I really hopes my wife don´t reading this:D So far I spent about £7000 :D I´m feel like that I have to explain some things!!!!! -shippingcosts from UK £800 -exhaust from Martin Keenan by the book about £500 -got real nice lamps from SVC about £300 -full set of instruments from RD about £300 The only cost I got to pay now is the money I will spent at the engine.... I got a 2.0L Pinto and I got twin Dellorto 40`s and a new manifold I also got all the gaskets. So the things I need is bearings, pistonrings, Kent cam set,oil pump and some moore things. Everypart I mount at my Roadster is renovated or new... I think that my Roadster will cost me about £8000 then it´s on the road and then it is like I wanted. That one of the best parts with building a Roadster you can do it your own way. It is possible to build it for about £3000 and have a great car and having wonderfull car to drive:D Have fun everyone Janne |
Those shipping costs are a real killer Janne
A lot of money spent but as you say, It's turned out how you wanted it to  One thing for sure .... Your Roadster will have the build quality of a Volvo .... How cool is that :) :) |
You are right Bonzo the shippingcosts is horrible:eek:
I have bought everything except the steel from England, if I had bought it here in Sweden it should had cost me at least £1500-£2000 MOORE:D :D A cost for about £8000-£10000 is normal to build a locost in Sweden. Janne |
Janne a question from Holland. How easy is it to get a home build car on the road in sweden? I mean how do you get a registration it is realy hard over here:mad:
|
I love this international world we live in.
|
Ha ha, my plan is to register in Estonia having built in Lithuania :-) At least it's possible there, even though it will cost around 1000€.
|
don't want to upset you janne but virtually everything on my car is new :D i even rebuilt the engine in the costs above :D
in fact the only bits that i didnt recon was the gearbox and the diff. although i did change all the oil seals on the diff |
Donor Car £150.00
Donor Car - Rebate of Sold Components -£368.87 Chassis & Wishbones £885.43 Steering, Suspension & Running Gear £770.74 Brake System £287.89 Nut & Bolts £126.34 Cologne V6 Engine, Close Ratio Gearbox & Propshaft £950.72 Bosch K Jet Mechanical Fuel Injection £535.19 Electrics £290.40 Bodywork & Interior £198.09 Enabling, Jigs & Consumables £103.63 Total Cost To Date £3,929.56 Predicted Outstanding Costs £728.90 SVA/IVA Inspection / Legal £450.00 SVA/IVA Inspection Retest (£90) £5,108.46 Plant Resources & Garage Stock Items £585.03 Start Date 19/07/2008 Current Date 21/02/2010 Number of Months Building 19 I don't reckon this is too bad considering that everything on the build s Cosworth specification - LSD differential, V6, Disc brakes, fuel injection etc |
Teun: I think it´s not that bad to reg. a car in Sweden. First you have to do two checks at SFRO the first one when you have a rolling chassi and the second one when your car is done, if you pass you go to the "Swedish Cartesting" for registration it´s cost about £700 total.
Ash: If I will build once moore I will order all I need and take a trip over and pick everything up, that should be a great holiday:D :D Ash I must told you your car looks amazing:cool: How much cost a new Zetech in England?? Have fun Janne |
Quote:
a brand new 2.0ltr Zetec in england costs £700, thats what i,ll be buying in winter time for my upgrade :D cheers andy |
Janne if you need a uk address to store some things then give me a shout.
|
Handy Andy

you did look in a shock or daze.......... also for info i saw a brand new in the crate black top zetec "1.8" sell on the bay the other day for £450 it seems the the the slightly less powerful/desireable 1.8L dont make such strong money. Thats still bloody good value for a brand new zero miles engine cheers les g |
Just as a note on costs here is also a bloody rip off:D
Will be looking at around $15000 here(about 7-8k uk) This is partly due to having to get an engineer to sign off on stages of the build and also that some parts are not easily available here or if they are available said companies take the piss.Personally have found it more worthwhile to buy stuff in uk and store at parents then ship out.Although you do get hit with import tax, gst(vat) & they also add the cost of the shipping onto the total value of your parts.(oh and any postage you paid in the uk also!!). Even so still cheaper than buying here. The other problem is also the quality of some parts,a prime example is fibreglass panels, most are shocking!!!!!so again looks like uk for parts.;) couple of examples of costs ................ uk ......................... aus escort rack $200...................... $450 plus exchange rack fuel funnel+cap $100............... $375 polo radiator $100.................... $475 |
OMG ozzy1
I guess when you read about us poms moaning about the IVA costs, it makes you smile ( Read, " Bleeding Whingeing Poms " ) :D It would seem that being in the UK is not, all bad .... Just feels like it ;) |

I'll be looking to spend just under £4000 once I have a roll cage installed.
|
Can you builders start spending a bit more! I don't want it to de-value mine when it goes up for sale in a few weeks! :p

Got to have a premium value Tim ;) Best of all .... It's on the road :) |

not got a budget on paper or anything, hoping it wont be more than £1500 (untested) but that is BIG hope, im in no rush for it and trying to get everything as cheap as possible so i'll spend what i have to but im always out for a bargain :)
Jake |
slim after all the effort I have put into mine, I would never sell it. its priceless to me. although if I had to put a price on mine I wouldn't accept a penny less than 6K. its cost near on 4k to build so the 2k on top for my time to build it is cheep as chips.
its also a heavily featured magazine and show car ;) with a full provenance build history not that i would play on that :D |
so far i,ve spent £90 thats for the full chassis and all the wishbones except the 5" tubes for the rear uprights
|
Given a choice, I probably wouldn't ever sell it - it's almost part of the family now! And that is from a non-builder - I should imagine the bond for you and others is greater - much respect.
However, in the bigger scheme of life, I have been told I can't have my cake and eat it. Not to say I can't hide it somewhere though. ;) |
Had another good add up yesterday and its cost me 5k so far with only wheels and iva to pay for
All new parts for brake system, drive shafts, battery etc etc for that price though Also i have been fortunate enough to get everything the way i wanted it except the engine (for iva reasons) so i wont be upgrading seats, lights, exhaust etc in the future :D Only the zetec and a set of nice instruments maybe as a winter project after iva and then it will be exactly how i want it Shes not far off now lights are on and rad is plumbed in, just exhaust and bonnet to fit, then all the finishing touches and i will be applying for iva :) |
im loving this you will be the 4th to iva after tilly :D wont be long before we have got a really good turn out at most of the shows.
has anyone heard from mr gibbs lately? his profile seems to be a bit low at the moment. need to get hold of him soon to see what we are doing about stoneleigh. will start a new thread as im hijacking |
Had a response from him last month regarding the steering rack query.
TT |
Thought I would resurrect this thread.
My budget is 3k on the road, but for this I will have to make some concessions to bling and shiny :( So may try and stretch it to 4k+, will just have to take longer over the build, and do more myself! |
mines projected at about 3.7 at the moment.
I bought a performance cam for the V6 which cost 120, bit of a luxury item. TT |
I've stopped with the budget in recent days as it was a bit worrying how much i'd spent so far, i'm much happier without one :D. However I'm looking to spend about £4000 with a full cage, 1.8 zetec engine, megajolt and bike carbs.
|
i lost count of how much i had spent very quickly as i didn't have space for a donor and had to buy all the parts not a good move. but its a long term project so it spreads the cost well.
