Rear hub nuts!
Ok, I have managed to get one hub nut off it am stuck! The other side is just spinning although the drive shaft isn't moving. It almost seems that it has been cross threaded on the driveshaft but won't wind back off. Any ideas guys it's doing my head in now?
Cheers guys |
Are you going the right way? some of the hubs are reversthreaded. I think there's a dot punched in if it's the case.. Think it's mentioned in the haynes.
TT |
The drivers side wound off anticlockwise and i'm turning the passenger side the same so.... i think so unless some sneaky sod has put a reversethreaded on on the passenger side! Nothing would surprise me though
|
Yup, passenger side is a left hand thread. You will bnotice that the nuts have different coloured locking rings, mine were green drivers side and white passenger side.
|
Damn, does that mean i've knackered something if it's spinning the other way? Will have a go the other way
|
No you haven't broken anything, you'll just have tightened it on something crazy. The nut is clearly marked as a reverse thread by notches put on the nut.
|
Cool, will go and have a play and see if I can get it done. Cheers
|
Right, had a go and it's still spinning. It has indeed got white on the locknut bit. Any bright ideas?

hi Russ,
not trying to cause you probs, but may i ask why are you trying to take the hub nuts off? cheers andy |
Hi andy,
I understood that they needed removing to remove the rear diff etc? Am I mistaken? Presumed it all needed stripping down when stripping the donor? |
You dont need them off unless you are replacing the bearings
|
You can remove the driveshafts complete with brakes from the donor without undoing the hub nuts, to get the diff out.
If you then want to take the backplate off of the driveshaft for cleaning / painting you will need to undo the hub nut. It is easier to loosen it while the car still has it's wheels, and sat on the ground. If not a big vice and air gun will be necessary as they are VFT. Passenger side if left hand thread. |
Quote:
To remove the driveshafts from the diff all you need do is undo the brake drum backing plate & the driveshaft carrier from the hub, then the driveshafts will pull away from the diff, or if you have bolt in shafts you then just undo the bolts at the diff end & the shaft is then free. hope this helps. cheers andy |
Ah :o
In that case I may have inadvertantly wasted several hours finding the right socket and buggering around!!! Damn!!!!! I will now go and replace the drivers side one and get on with something that I actually need to do. I will worry about it when I want to replace the rear brake shoes instead! Cheers everyone anyway |
I think if you have disk brakes then you have to undoo the nut as the lorobo joint comes out the back.
