Need a 1.8 cvh ....
Well, it looks like my 1.8 carb cvh isnt any good. its only done 75k, but it is smoking too much and its not worth a rebuild. anyone know where i can get a good 1.8 cvh cheap? Thanks!:)

Could you not diagnose the fault and then fix it? e.g. if its smoking a lot then it could be the valve stem seals?

edit: I have no idea how to diagnose the problems either. I did a compression test on it today as well i got them all at about 95-105 psi. Any idea? im really hoping to find a cheap cvh that'll probably be cheaper than fixing the engine. |
The valve stem oil seals are a known problem on the CVH engine .... The engine will smoke like a pig when the seals have lost their softness ;)
Edit Hmmm Black & sooty .... That sounds like a fuel problem !! Sent my good CVH engine to the breakers  :( :( |
Im just taking a stab in the dark here and im sure someone more knowledgeable will comment. Could it be the mixture running far too rich, meaning some fuel isn't getting burn't, giving incomplete combustion, thus giving the black smoke?

I wondered one thing, on hybrid ignition module end on the vacuum valve tubing, it goes to 2 tubes, one to the vacuum valsve, where does the other go?
|
A rich mixture could be caused by either 2 things, too much fuel or too little air, i'm afraid i dont know much about carbs, but have you done much in terms of cleaning them using some car cleaner since you got them?
I definitely think you should try and find the cause of the issue instead of buying a new CVH engine, as it could have exactly the same issue. Are you using the standard carb or bike carbs? |
Well, if it's not blue smoke that's good news, blue smoke comes from burning oil - black smoke comes from a mixture problem. The fact that it reduces when you open the choke is good, as soon as it has some warmth in it the choke should be fully open - I assume yours is autochoke? Try disconnecting it and keeping the choke open for starters. Is the choke air inlet open or do you have an air filter? If you have a filter, take it off for now, see if it makes it better. I don't know the carb on your engine but I would be about 90 per cent certain that's where your problems lie. Your car is running seriously rich - an air leak would make it run lean, the only thing that can make it run rich is overfueling which is down to the carb.

everything is standard, I know very little about carbs as well, almost nothing, but im always ready to learn:o . If i knew what the problem was id be more than happy to fix it, but i don't want to waste my money on a lost cause at the same time. |

would over hauling the carb ang giving it a good clean help as i could do that in an hour or 2..? |
Enoch & Tatey have given good advice, perhaps buy the "Colourtune kit", this is a kit you can buy ( I think about £20) that helps set up the fueling of a carbed engine,
Don,t give up on the engine just yet, as Enoch has said ...the fact its not blueish smoke is a good sign. Or get one of those mobile home tuners to come & service the engine ;) :) They,ll have the correct equipment & knowledge to solve your problem. cheers andy |
Cleaning the carb won't do any harm. Make sure that the fuel flow is being cut off when the float is at the right height. If there is too much fuel in the float bowl it will run as rich as Richard Branson, which would cause shit running and black smoke. Best way to check that is with the carb stripped get a length f clean tube on to the carb fuel inlet and blow through it. When yu gently lift the float it should be impossible to continue blowing - that will prove if teh fuel is getting shut off OK.

Definatly sounds like it's over fuling.
Perhaps somone here who has gone to bike carbs has a spare peirburg kicking arround. It's 10 years since I played with a 2e3 on a sierra, they have various things like accelerator pumps that may be stuck. A full careful strip and clean may be all it needs. One other thing... HAve you got a fuel return from the carb? TT |
