Emmissions???
How do people with newer engines (eg. zetec) get through the emmisions test on an iva?
Is there even room to fit a cat on the exhaust?? My current car is a Ford KA, which i've fitted a 1.8 zetec engine in (pics on request, if anyone's bothered lol). So i'd like to put a 2.0 zetec in the project car, as i'm familiar with the zetec engines - just wondering how people get it to pass? Also, after iva i'd like a carbed zetec :D |
i would like to see pics of ur Ka i like engine swaps

Here you go...
![]() ![]() 1.8 Mondeo Blacktop Ashley 4 branch manifold RS1800 inlet and ecu 2.0 MAF and Throttle body It's a tight fit! lol Here's a pic of the car... ![]() |
nice i bet that is quick
|
it's not slow, but the roadster will be quicker! :D

Nice work David
Looks as if you have done a darn tidy job of that conversion :) :) As for the Roadster, sports CATS are available & some Motor cycle Cans have a CAT built within them ;) |
Hi David,
Just coming over from your other thread, the easiest way is to put the car through on Sierra CVH on pre 92 emissions then you can easily upgrade to new Zetec and they don't know any different. I went that route originally and Mark, on here, has just passed on the same. You're upto 170bhp for the easiest and cheapest route possible. If you're passing i'll take you out in the Saturn Car which is 2.0l Zetec on bike carbs and MegaJolt. Just installed a full new electronic dash aswell and need to get out to test it anyway. Mark if you are reading this i'm ready to borrow your gps to calibrate the speedo.......;) Cheers.....AndyH |
Only problem there would be needing 2 engines. I may aswell just go for a pinto on carbs until it blows up. haha.
I'm going down to "fiesta in the park" this weekend, but i'd love to come out with you sometime - Thanks for the offer! (assuming i could come up on a weekend) lol |
Just as a side note - would a bike engine pass an iva emmisions test? or is that an "after engine" too?
|
Tilley's car passed the IVA with his Blackbird engined Roadster  :)
|
Done a bit of research over the last few days and a bike engine would be way above my budget.
I've also found Q-plate cars only require a visual smoke test for MOTs, which means a carbed zetec will be fine for MOTs - but i'm guessing i still need to get it through the IVA emmissions. Is there a cat that is strong enough to get carbs through an IVA? that i can remove once it's passed?? |
If you get a pre 94 engine then you don't need a cat, and you are held to a much lower emissions standard (i've got myself a pre 94 1.8 silvertop zetec). If you are looking to buy a brand new zetec, then you can buy a pre 94 engine such as a CVH, get the car to pass the IVA with that engine and then swap it out for a brand new zetec.
|
I dont have the money for a brand new engine :P And not really enough to buy 2 engines either lol.
If needs be i'd put the zetec through iva on injection with a cat, but if possible, i'd prefer to get it to pass on carbs. :D |
Just buy yourself a pre 94 zetec engine, I got mine for £40, then buy some bike carbs and a megajolt system. The 1.8 zetec will run quite happily on ZX9R carbs and megajolt without proper tuning on a rolling road and will sail through the IVA.
|
That would be the best soloution, if i could find a pre 94 zetec! Does the IVA man require proof of age/car
|
The only proof he requires is the engine number as he then uses that to look up the manufacture date of the engine to decide if it is a pre 94 engine.
EDIT: Looks like im slightly wrong with this. You need the engine number and some proof of the engines age. Depending on the testing station it could be just a print out of the burton power website which tells you what year the engine was made from the engine number, or you might need a letter from ford themselves telling you when your engine was made. |

Yes you are correct Tatey it is up to the individual to prove engine block age + if it is Aug92 to Jul95 you must also prove that it came from a car not fitted with cat to get easier emmissions.
Hello CC, all speedo and new dashboard is working great. Will be at the unit all day, and its going to be a nice one. Cheers...AndyH |
Spud do you know what the IVA people will accept as a suitable evidence to prove what car the engine came from?
|
Eddie99 on Locost builders has 2.0L Zetec in a seven and has a very neat/small cat in the pipe after the joint to the manifold. These cats are often seen at the kit car shows and are quite cheap.
You will be advised to fit the engine at this stage complete with standard injection system, fit a lambda sensor and check the emmissions. Getting round the Ford ECU security is very difficult and I find the Megasquirt a bit beyond me at this time, you may need to budget for an ECU and setup. |
Davey,
To avoid having a catalyst on a kit car you'll need a pre-1995 engine. You'll need proof from the manufacturer's homologation dept that the engine is pre- 1995, (not usually a problem), but age of the engines donor vehicle is no longer accepted. You do not NOT need proof the engine did not have a cat, just that it was pre-1995 - see the emissions flow chart in the IVA manual. Q plate cars registered before the SVA came in require only visible smoke, but if the car was registered with SVA or IVA it'll come up automatically on the MOT computer what emissions test is required. (Whether registered with SVA or IVA, some sort of emissions will be measured unless engine is pre-1975). HTH BV:) |
