bend/foldable plastic

I've been trying to remember what the clear plastic is called that you can put a near 180' bend in it with out it snapping? I know it's used in bus stops and rallycross for side windows. Any body know what it's called?

DStanley1809 11th August 2010 11:00 PM

Perspex?

And just to fill out some extra letters because the forum won't let me post an 8 character message, who else knew there was a minimum message size?

perspex wont bend, it's brittle. But it is what is used in bus shelter signs and motorsport side windows.

with heat you will be able to bend it though.

thin Polycarbonate sheet is very flexible without heating, its the stuff used to make conservatory roofing, but in sheet form instead, its quite expensive though.

DStanley1809 11th August 2010 11:20 PM

Polycarbonate was my first guess but I looked up bus shelters and motorsport windows and came up with perspex lol

Lexan? Mylar?

Talonmotorsport 11th August 2010 11:35 PM

Just found the answer on another forum, stuff I am looking for is lexan. You can slighty over bend it cold and it will keep it's shape. Ideal for making curved light covers like on a Fisher Fury,Deano,TVR etc. Thanks for all your efforts.

DStanley1809 11th August 2010 11:52 PM

Isn't Lexan just a trademarked brand of polycarbonate?

Talonmotorsport 12th August 2010 07:47 AM

To be honest I'm not sure if it's a trade name or not, all I know is that some polycarb. does not bend and tends to shatter when you bend it in a V die on a brake press.

Davey 12th August 2010 07:57 AM

Lexan is a trade name as far as I'm aware but it is not just ordinary polycarbonate, its damned near indestructible which is why its used in bus stops etc. I was once asked to try and destroy a piece to demonstrate its toughness, it withstood 15 minutes of battering with a four pound lump hammer. it was badly deformed but didn't break.

Makrolon is made from polycarbonate we used to use it for power press guards its immensely strong and can be bent too.
if you need to bend 180 degrees you prob need to talk to a plastic specialist

lexan is pretty tough stuff - i bought some 4mm smoked for the top part of my custom made doors on the dax - looked pretty cool. bare ally on the bottom

trickydicky0_16 13th August 2010 07:25 PM

lexan is a trade name for polycarb,it can be bent on a press brake though you might need to over bend it if you want 90 degrees, it also can be punched on a punch press

cheers

As Ray say's Makrolon is the dogs bits, the right grade is bullet proof the piece I tried took a .357 magnum and just dented it.
