Ali grade and thickness Again!!
 

Ok I know there has been many posts in the past but as there are many answers I thought I'd ask for a show of hands.

Bodywork 1050 H14 Ali do I use 1.0mm or 1.2mm? Yes I want it to be easy worked with but I also want it to withstand minor "dings" as much as can be expected.

Fuel tank 2.0mm?

I've some leave next week and plan to collect some sheets on Monday. 8x4 sheet of 1.2mm is about £25 +VAT from a local supplier, a bargain compared to some of the old posts I've been looking at this morning.:D

Definately a good price,I was quoted £40 for 8x4 sheet of half hard 1.2.

:mad: No fair - I just paid 100 quid for 2 sheets of 1mm H14 1m x 2.5m :mad:

So I'll take that as 1 for 1mm and 1 for 1.2mm. Any other comments?

Use whatever is easiest to work with for my money Jimmy,I would use and will use 2mm for the tank .

15mm steel, i reckon.

i hope you meant 1.5mm TT, Would be suprised if the car would move using 15mm;)

I'm glad I'm not the only one using treadplate for the floor. Took forever to abrade away the treads where the chassis tubes butt up to it though.

I am using 1.2mm half hard for the bodywork & used 2mm for the floor n fuel tank.

The rear panel formed a lot easier than I expected & was no trouble at all to make :)

The floor is well sorted, without the slightest hint of a boing when stepped on .... Probably due the the gazillion rivets used





Not saying 1mm is wrong .... Just a tad lightweight for my own personal taste.

That is a very good price on the 1.2mm alloy, talk about the " luck of the Irish " :)

Just picked up 3 sheets of 2500x1250 x1.2mm and 1 sheet 2000x1000 x2mm for £106 Inc VAT :D :D :D

I must say, that's a darn good price for the alloy :)

The last sheet of 1.2mm I bought cost me £47 :eek:

Best of all .... I promtly cocked it up by cutting the side pannel blanks 10mm too narrow :o :o

Just as well it is still useable for other things.

Will 3103 H14 2mm do for the floor?

I would imagine it will be fine James :)

Just that parker steel don't seem to stock the H22 anymore and i'm looking at getting it in the next week

I was just playing around laying out rough outlines of ali pannels on 2500x1250 three sheets:

It seems that 3 sheets are definitely needed when doing ali rear, sides and bonnet: basically one sheet for each of these parts. Thought this drawing might be helpful to others.
