Steel quantity

Im looking to price up my steel, just wondering how much i will need for my build. I dont want to buy 10 meters too much of steel as i just wont use it.
i priced up 20mts of 25x25x16swg erw and it was £30+ vat. is this an average price? the book doesnt show a quantity list.
Thanks.

depends if you are building the chassis to book spec or to accept the Saturn GRP rear tub, but if its the latter you will need approx 37 mtrs of 25mm box & approx 18mtrs of 19mm ( 20mm is fine ), most builders pay about £110 plus delivery for the above .

You will end up with a little left over of each size, but it comes in handy for making "dummy shocks" etc.

hope this helps
cheers

Il order the extra in case i take the saturn route. Thanks for the help Andy

No probs, happy to help:)

Most steel stockists supply the steel in either 6mtr or 7mtr lengths so it may appear that you over order but I assure you, the extra comes in handy (:D ) for other bits or for having a few practise welds etc.

best wishes for your build

cheers

I used up 42 m of 25x25 (a couple of offcuts left, just one of them longer than 50 cm, great as a wrench extension) and 14 m. of 20x20.

Locky....If you are going the Ali tub route, don,t forget the round tube needed;)

I must admit when I order steel for a chassis kit I order 6x7mtrs of 25mm & 3x7 of 19mm, but I always have steel left over, also the kits go with spare steel so I tend to use what I need when I need it:)

You can guarantee you will cock up a few times too so a little extra is always nice :D

We have all been there measure twice cut once realise its wrong measure again cut again etc etc!

Especially when you have been cutting compound mitres!

Wont be using ali tube i dont think.
As for items RP1 and 2 I am going to use a some steel conduit i can get from work for free and alraedy galvanised, plus i have a tube bender up to 25mm tube for work which will come in handy.

flyerncle 14th October 2010 07:49 PM

Galvanised pipe is nasty stuff to weld and poisonous too with the zinc coating.

mark 14th October 2010 07:53 PM

Its fine if you grind it off the surrounding area first as its only a thin coating

Flyerncle is quite right though zinc poisoning or galv flu as its known by welders/fabricators is more serious than people give credit for.

I buy my steel in 7.5 mtr lengths and what i did NO offence to Handy Andy was used his cutting list but insted of doing it in the order he had it in put 7500 into my calculator and minus for example a,b,c,d,e,f, and say 500mm left but the next cut in line would be say 750mm i then looked for others to fill it bearing in mind the cutting blade for each length has to be allowed and I got it down to 5 lengths saving me buying 1 more.

if this helps
I have read it back and its seem fine:D

Locky 15th October 2010 04:46 PM

Yeah its very poisonous that zinc, il prep the ends before welding as its only a coating. Deanno, is there any chance of your cutting list please if it not too much trouble?
I dont mind buuying an extra length because i know for certain that im going to mess up.
cheers.

Deanno 17th October 2010 08:34 PM

No probs, i'm in the middle of ammending it so i'll post it up when its done.

Locky 17th October 2010 09:34 PM

Super thank you very much

Deanno 22nd November 2010 12:57 PM

Sorry its been a while (Been moving House)
The cutting list is done for the Box section only but for some reason I cannot get it to upload on here.
If you PM me your e-mail i'll forward it on to you.

brainbug007 22nd November 2010 01:55 PM

Did you use hot or cold rolled steel for the plates?

Deanno 22nd November 2010 02:36 PM

I used off cuts in work I think most of it is hot rolled but not sure as we get both.

brainbug007 22nd November 2010 02:46 PM

Thought it would be hot rolled as it sounds like it's stronger than cold rolled?

Locky 25th November 2010 10:09 PM

PM sent Deanno, thank you very much.
