Steering Column Mount

I'm looking to weld on my steering column mount, but have a question about the column. I got the column for £12.50 from ebay. The bracket it comes with doesn't seem to fit anywhere on the column, I can't seem to find any detailed pictures on build threads to show me how it fits and as I didn't remove the column myself I can't rely on how it goes together.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Here is a picture of my column:

I've also taken a picture of my build as it stands, 2 of my shocks arrived today from SSC (I can only afford two at the moment, the next 2 will be ordered next month). I've also started trial fitting the engine and fabbing up engine mounts, I just need to wait until I go home for the weekend to pick up some 25x50mm steel to make the mounting arms.

I don't think the ally bracket is part of that column
the folded metal bracket is what you bolt to the car

That's what I was thinking as the folded metal bracket does the same as what the ally bracket would do on a column, but it came with the column so I assumed it was needed?

It is an adjustable column, so i guess i'll be using the folded bracket!

Mine is adjustable, I don't recall seeing the alloy bracket

Interesting as I have pulled the column from a Ginetta G20 and its fixed with the ally bit shown in Simon's picture,The square holed bit is the one you want.

This is said bracket on my column which is the non adjustable type.

Well that confirms it then as my ally bracket will in no way fit over the column.

Does anyone need an ally steering bracket?

Hold on to that bracket, you cannot buy them! I know because I have tried everywhere! It's a cast aluminium, but has no tensile strength, so if if over bent it is likely to crack.

My original bracket was broken, hence why I got my donor car so cheap. I had to machine up a new profile. Sure you will get a few quid for it on ebay. Say £25 -30 to some one who has a broken one, much cheaper than a new steering column at £150

i got a s/h steering lock off ebad and it was a non ajustable type so i swaped over the steering lock. if you want to convert the alloy lock section tapps off once you have the steering shaft out
then you swap the fixed tube and alloy bracket but over and chuck the ajustable bit (the tubes are diffrent!) :D
btw the alloy cast bit is availble on its own or you have to buy the whole outer collum and its uber pricey

ps you just choped out tr8 to get your zetec to fit? im doing mine and i fitted an offset section wher the bell housing goes
i made it 28mm set back but i havent fitted up yet

I didn't fit TR8 as I've been told that a CVH engine wont fit with it installed (I was originally going for a CVH). I will be strengthening the engine bay once I have got everything installed.

I got tacked the steering column mount in place last night, it just needs tweaking slightly to get the column completely straight.

I've also just ordered a bearing from Bearing Boys for the column to replace the Sierra rubber bush. So once that arrives I'll get that bolted in place. It's all starting to come together now and my motivation to get it finished is higher than ever. I'm really looking forward to Stonesleigh now to buy a load of parts!

May I just point out that Baz R means that he,ll be doing the alteration to TR8 to allow the Zetec thermostat housing to fit the chassis.

I presume Tatey means he didn,t fit TR5 & not TR8 as he has stated.

Hope you don,t mind me pointing this out, as I wouldn,t like new builders to think TR8 doesn,t need to be fitted.....It MUST be fitted to ensure chassis rigidity across the engine bay.

TR5 can be omitted, subject to choice of engine being installed. If not installing TR5 it is a good idea to brace the engine bay with shorter corner braces between TR1 / TR2 to TR8.

cheers
andy
