How do you make your exhaust quieter?

I've noticed that my exhausts are way too loud, so I have to make it considerably quieter.

I'd rather not add a second silencer to each side as it would look pants, but I will if that's what it takes. I'd rather fit inserts inside the pipe, but won't that sap some engine power? And how effective are they really?

It's a question of this:

or one of these:

The inserts really sap power, in my experience of turbo jap cars anyway

Personally i would try to do it with bigger or additional silencers if possible

bigger silencer is the only real way without losing power. to get through iva i put a restricter in mine but it really sucked power.

Bugger, was hoping the inserts wouldn't be that bad.

Need to get it down to about 90db max for track days.

Hi Sam,

only using a cvh but I went for the biggest CBS do - 7", mine recorded 92db during the IVA.

£200 notes though:eek:

Same as mine & mine was only 87db at iva!

The tester said "hold it at 3000rpm" i said, i am! :D

Its a fair bit louder with the st engine though, but still not too much

Yeah, problem is though I'm running a V8 so I actually have 2 exhausts so that would be £400.

Question, despite the power loss caused by decibel inserts - do they work? Are they any good. I'm tempted to order a pair to try cos they're only £6 each.

£400 is a good price!!
sounds expensive - i was quoted £600+ from simpsons for a busa single can!
dax rush zetec exhaust system complete costs £700+ x2 for a V8
so thats not a bad price

earplugs are cheaper still, or wear a helmet?

No good when racing circuits have noise limits though...

Ok, you don't like the earplugs idea. You don't want to add mufflers. You don't want to lose power. Hmmmm, well I guess your only option is to install a pair of turbochargers. They do a good job of chopping up the exhaust pulses, and they add power.

Problem solved!

Hmmmm - I like it, I like it a lot!
