Lotus buys caterham Back!!!

Unbelievable!

Except it's not really Lotus, it's the asian team using the Lotus name under license. Lotus-Renault are the actual lotus team.

Would love to know how much they acquired it for......:D

I just hope it doesn't go the same way as tvr did

Maybe it has something to do with this?

And as they didn't own the rights to the Seven name, but they do now, well you just never know ;)

Funky sevenish...

MikeB 12th May 2011 12:53 PM

looks interesting some decent touches don't like the front lights though.
Its the wrong lotus though.
Team Lotus bought Caterham

Group Lotus who make the cars (elise etc) dont' have the rights to the seven name.

TVR coming back apparantly..
Nikolia is going to build to order the old models. No big production line.

Not sure how, who or how much but I think we may see TVR;s roll again. They will have lost their UK blackpoolness which is shame though

When Caterham bought the Lotus 7, it was the series IV fibreglass uglyness that they bought. After a short time they restarted building the Series III. I was never sure that they actually bought the Series III design.

As far as owning the number "7". My Mini wasn't called a Mini when it was built in 1961. It was an Austin 7 850. There were Austin 7's long before there were Lotus 7's. I don't think you can copyright a number.

MarkB 12th May 2011 02:51 PM

caterham own the use of the number 7 and seven even clubman when used to describe cars like the lotus 7...They take people to court for using it;)

flyerncle 12th May 2011 06:22 PM

As do Poor Joe (Peugeot)for their use of the "0"

A good attorney would kick Caterham's behind.

Not here they won't that's why you don't see anyone using anything other than LSIS in relation to a seven style car. I know a firm who had to change the name of their car because of it.

aerosam 13th May 2011 11:24 AM

How come at Soneleigh, all the cars on the Lotus 7 owners club pitch were caterhams? Should it not be the Caterham 7-ish Clubman-type-sportscar owners club?

Even more confusion.

My car is part Locost, part Haynes Roadster, part my own design, what the H should I call it? A Roadcost? A Locster, or oven a Haynes Roa-Lo-Cost-der!!! Ha ha! How many people could sue me for using all that lot? :D

did they go to court? Most firms get scared when they get a letter from an attorney and just give in. Lotus wasn't the first car company to use 7 and that should prevent them from claiming it's use exclusively.
