Ruined caliper advice needed
Whilst building up my brake system today I got to the front calipers.
The first was fine, on the second I managed to shear the bleed nipple off. I tried welding and then drilling and still couldn't get it out. So I've ruined the thread for the nipple. Can I tap it again and use a larger nipple (what size?) or do I need to get a new caliper? If so where can I get a new (to me) caliper (its the teves one). Really annoyed as I was hoping to have a braked car by this evening. |
broken bleed nipple
This is a method for removing broken studs in blind holes that i have used with great success. Place a thick penny washer with a hole in it the same diameter as the broken stud over the remains of the stud, get the mig welder out and blast through the hole and stick the washer to the stud. You can then stick a decent size nut to the washer and just undo it. This somtimes takes a couple of goes but it has never failed me , it has worked on massive bolts on heavy plant track frames down to small studs in ali cases. I think it must be the heat from the welding that makes the stud let go but always seems to work. As for the damaged thread i could only think of a helicoil as you dont want to damage the taper seat.

I tried to weld a nut onto it but failed, then stupidly drilled it.

They are not megabucks Steve so replace it,for your own safety and peace of mind and all things being equal it will probably leak.

with the washer you get a chance to get weld across the whole of the broken stud, its a lot harder trying to weld down through a nut. What calipers are they?
|
Standard sierra ones.
Where can u get them and should I do the pair. |
I have got an old turbotechnics 4x4 sierra in the yard that is going to get the gas axe through it tomorrow. If you want the calipers off that your welcome. I dont know the condition of them but they might do you a turn.

Nice people on this forum ;)

I wouldn't say no to them, let me know once you've got them off.
Cheers bob |
Just had a quick look they are on vented discs with a slider and piston is in the inside. Is this the same?
Bob |
Vented discs,
They have 2 Allen bolt studs rather than ones that are bolted on. ![]() |
As opposed to this type

That looks like the kiddies to me. I will get them off and box them up for you tomorrow. Pm an address and i will send them. Stick a tenner in a kiddies charity box next time you pass one.
