Hey All Noobie from Chester

Hey All!

Noobie from Chester embarking on an MX5 based project.

Been having a good nosey round at some of your build threads for info and insperation and come to the conclusion that I would like an MX5 based car which I can modify progressively as the build progresses.

As it as forum this thread will be pic heavy (but dont we all love pics!)

Donor

Welcome to the forum, looks like you have started your way on the path to stress, frustraition, sleepless nights , painfull lows and even minor highs at times oh the joys of a self build car! I would get that stripped down to a bare shell ASAP as scrap steel prices are currently at £180 per 1000kg and increasing. What are your plans for improvements would these be along the lines of a turbo, super charger or both :D

CTWV50 13th July 2011 09:38 AM

Wow you live in Chester, that's not too far from me in Formby, I'm building an MX-5 car myself. Well done on getting a donor looks idea, is it a 1.6 or 1.8?Thanks for the tip off Talon, I didn't know "light Iron" was on it's way up again! Been stock piling for some months now.:D

Welcome to the forum. Nice choice of donor

K4KEV 13th July 2011 01:59 PM

welcome Sven....that donor looks fair tidy from the photo's it looks like you will get some good dollar off the likes of the roof, doors etc.....enjoy your build and keep us posted.

sven8t4 13th July 2011 05:48 PM

Hey All!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Been on 3 trips to the scrappy today weighing in a Cat C 106 and a Lexus 430GS ( engine transplant in a Supra 3.0l straight 6 to 4litre V8) so I can concour that steel prices are good!

Should be collecting the MX5 next Mon or Tue. Its a 1.6 fairly tidy but has seen its days as a MAZDA..... lol

After build and rebuilding various Mini's, 306 Dturbo's, Volvo T5R's i'm familar with pain dont worry! just a nice little project out of the profits out of the last few Cat C/D rebuilds.

monsterob 13th July 2011 06:37 PM

welcome its quite fun here ! sounds /looks like you frequent the co part lot quite a bit ? did you ever see a white mini in there with a vtec engine smashed to bits ?

good luck with your build im in crewe and need excuses to get out on my bike if your ever stuck .

TheArf 13th July 2011 08:39 PM

Didnt realise there were so many like minded mad men in the cheshire/ wrexham area! I'm going to be doing the build at work in Wrenbury (Nr Nantwich) well it would be rude not to use their power!

twinturbo 13th July 2011 09:53 PM

ayjay 14th July 2011 10:49 PM

I think i deserve now to be able to post advice without fear of contradiction:)

Anyone need advice on

1 Welding
2 Workshop practices and materials
3 Precision Engineering
4 Inhaling strange substan----------:p

Sorry got a bit carried away with fame:D

sven8t4 16th July 2011 06:29 PM

Another purchase today http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-WELDING-MAGNET-MAGNETS-DEDICATED-ANGLES-25-50-75LB-/190548822498?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2 c5d9849e2

Set of Welding magnets....bound to come in handy... and managed to blag work into sending me on a welding course ( can all ready weld but nothing like having a certificate too at their expense! )

Table should be built tomorrow ;o)

Tues/Wed collect the MX5 Donor then speak to Andy about an MX5 based flat pack :)

robo 16th July 2011 06:48 PM

We use them they are really handy. Keep them wrapped up in cloth because every bit of swarf within 75 miles seems to find its way on to them and they are a fxcker to keep clean. Dont try weld to close them either as they throw the weld.

Bob

sven8t4 16th July 2011 10:19 PM

Hey Bob,

Cheers for that I'll bear that in mind.....aswell as not putting my mobile near them..... made that mistake once! D'oh!

leroybrown911 17th July 2011 01:49 PM

Welcome to the forum :)

sven8t4 19th July 2011 01:31 PM

Won my donor from Copart £375....now as soon as the MX5 chassis is ready as a flat pack that'll be winging its way to work too! :)

james3004 19th July 2011 03:14 PM

Do you get a v5 with it? Or are you going for a q plate?

sven8t4 19th July 2011 03:43 PM

I'll get the V5 :)

twinturbo 19th July 2011 04:58 PM

I wish they would not use fork lifts on salvage cars, damages all sorts. My Cat C Galaxy has crushed sill, crushed water pipes and a crushed fuel tank. and the real damage was a low speed impact that damaged the front bumper and rads.

sven8t4 19th July 2011 08:28 PM

Does anyone know of a template for the dash?

sven8t4 25th July 2011 03:16 PM

Quick update,

VIN letter written and posted ( from this site )

Interior coming out ( in work and *supposed* to be working )

More bits listed on ebay.

sven8t4 29th July 2011 01:55 PM

VIN number arrived from the DVLA in less the 48hrs?!?!?! I was shocked!

Just need the chassis now to stamp it onto..... Where is the standard place? Think the manual says it must be on the offside but doesnt say where?
