Diy powder coating system

I have been hunting about for one of these diy powder coating systems for a while and have came across the manufacturer in china and have started asking the questions regarding having a load shipped to me

Question is how many people want one if we can get a group buy together as long as the price is right of course

I dont have any prices yet just want to know how many to order

vmax1974 20th August 2011 08:32 PM

By the way a simple steel cabinet from ikea a meat thermometer and a couple of heat guns and you hot a dedicated curing oven

Bonzo 20th August 2011 09:55 PM

Sounds very interesting :)

I very nearly put my hand in my pocket to buy one at Exeter show last year.

Seen some quite good results from those once you get the ideal baking temp right

I worked for a large industrial machinery manufacturer a few years back, they had a fantastic powder coat line running.
If the part to be powder coated was prepared correctly you can achieve a very durable finish indeed ;)

Powder coated a huge range of things for my boats ( Above the waterline ) & everything I did stood up to marine life very well.

If I remember correctly, the Exeter show price for those kits was £125 on the day .

vmax1974 20th August 2011 10:05 PM

Yeah I have seen them at about the same price so having a bit of experience importing stuff in the past am thinking I could get it down to about the 80 quid mark

Bonzo 20th August 2011 10:15 PM

Definately interested at the 80 squid mark :)

My eldest has just paid £250 to have his inlet manifold powder coated

An absolute rip off if you ask me, well it is when bearing in mind that his engine builder would have been bead blasting his manifold in order to give it a standard alloy finish that was part of the inclusive engine re-build price

Yes at £80 ish quid I'd be very interested as I have access to a decent oven at work to bake things in!

Seen the finished product which is great but have never seen it done. What else ouside if the kit your looking at will be needed. Also how big a piece can you do. Please dont suggest putting it in the oven at home to cure I would end up with no man vegetables.

Well you could use an infra red heater to do panels and what not or if you doing a chassis you could use a heat gun but it may take a while will be looking for the powders too but I dont want loads lying about my garage was thinking of looking for other tools and gadget's roadster build handy stuff but its all early days

Talonmotorsport 21st August 2011 07:02 PM

It might be worth finding out what sort of temp is needed to bake off the powder. It's my understanding that using a heat gun won't be enough as the material underneath has to heated for the powder to stick, otherwise it just lays over the material and is prone to peeling off. One thing I do know is that if you make a mess of coating the part and you've baked it if you soak it in thinners for a day it all just falls off.

I've got one works better on ally in my opinion

robo 22nd August 2011 07:26 AM

Thats the dobermans danglers. So this system needs no primer and goes on any metals. then pop it into an oven .job done ???????????????????????????

Bob

vmax1974 22nd August 2011 07:36 AM

Yeah basically you gotta key the metal first and use a dedicated oven but I got ideas for that just gotta get a metal box to about 180 degrees and you got your oven

robo 22nd August 2011 08:00 AM

And thats suitable for all brackets ,suspension and engine components.
Temperature rating ???????????

vmax1974 29th August 2011 01:10 PM

Just an update I am in negotiations with the supplier of the systems looking good so far just gotta get them to sell me less than 100 units its looking like the 80 quid mark is about the right price just to make you all aware I wont be making any money out of this just want to give everyone the chance of having them at the best price I can

So who wants one and how many do I order

K4KEV 29th August 2011 01:30 PM

What do you get in the kit ?I could well be interested in this

vmax1974 29th August 2011 02:06 PM

I will get a photo and full description when I get some time have still gotta look at powders but cant stock loads of colours

Have been thinking of setting up a website and offering all the tools and trim if I can get it at the right price not able to go out and buy massive amounts of stock to if people would give me an idea of what they find essential I will look into stocking it

What a brilliant idea, that way I wont end up with a rolling pin buried in my head and all my clothes put in a suitcase.

I agree you would not want to cook anything in it after using it to cure the powder coat

The way I understand it is that you would need to have a dedicated 30amp supply to your workshop to run a conventional oven and it could be limited on size of item you can fit inside

TheArf 29th August 2011 04:04 PM

I too was thinking of an old fan oven or one of those belling table top ovens that they use in bedsits need to look on eBay see what is local

ayjay 29th August 2011 04:09 PM

No need for 30amp supply for an oven ---its the hob rings which have high demand. Oven on its own is OK.

So what you saying is cook the bones then do the sauce or you will blow a fuse? :)

ayjay 29th August 2011 07:50 PM

Sauce is ok but dont put the kettle on at the same time:D

vmax1974 30th August 2011 03:15 PM

Ok I have got the price now but I have decided not to tell till I put the order in they will be about the 80 quid mark but will come without any powder so for now you will have to source that yourself so lets have a list of taker's

I will think about that, will want loads of black for sure, meantime it would be useful to know the coverage rate per what ever size bottle it comes in.
