Hayabusa or S2000 - Opinions
Got a bit of a dilemma, i've finally decided i fancy a change to power plant in my Roadster. After chilling out camping yesterday and listening to all the motorbikes screaming along the Stokesley to Helmsley road (an infamous biker and roadster stretch of flat out blasting) i need something along them lines. So is it to be a Hayabusa, 200bhp, expensive but the bike engine to go for or a Honda S2000, 240bhp and 9000rpm. The S2000 engine would give out something in the middle of the Zetec and bike engine. A good S2000 engine can be bought for a full kit of engine, gearbox, loom plus other bits for 2.5k, would also sell my own zetec inc gearbox, carbs, exhaust, megajolt, fast cams to recover some of the cost.
Got plenty of time to consider as i'll be doing this following completion of the single seater as a reward to myself. It would certainly be awesome either way just cant decide which way to go, don't really want a turbo engine as i dont think it would really suit the roadster for the way i drive. Does anybody have any other thoughts on which way to go. Cheers.....Andrew |
S2000,more reliable than bike engine and less likely to go bang every five minutes, expensively......

Agreed,personal thought just dont fancy constant gear changes and falling out of power band,clutch replacement and you need a sump change to stop surge,Honda motor for me.

Its a no brainer Andy.... S2000... quite a bit of tuning gear to be had as well but with 240 horses already:eek: it won't need any and ice cold cool factor on lifting the bonnet :cool:

I don't think I could live with the full on mayhem of a bike engine on a long term basis. Guess I am not the right person to have a view on this, I stopped riding bikes when they stated frighening the life out of me :o :o Tis a nice dilemma to have though & whatever way you decide to go, I am sure that you will get plenty of smles from the miles :cool: |
You already know what i think of s2k engines! they are a masterpiece, feel a little underpowered in higher gears in the s2000 but 1st and 2nd are frantic :D
Couple that with half the weight in a roadster and it would be phenominal 2.5k is steep though, find one in a scrappy that doesnt do kit car packages etc and you will get all you need for less than that You also have to factor in the cost of a decent aftermarket ecu as the standard one is meant to be extremely difficult to use when its not attached to all the gubbins of the s2k |
I built a car previously with a zx9 motor in and it was manic to drive,great for a B road blast but the rest of the time not so nice.I would look at it like this;
1 If your just going for a blast and trackdays then go the Hayabusa. 2 If you want a car to ramp the tits out of but also just want to go for a nice sunday jolly then go the S2000. |

Although a bike engine may have the ponies, it lacks on torque. They are not made to move the weight of a seven around and therefor need to be kept on the boil to have worthwhile performance and this will hamper reliability on the long run. Another drawback is the sequential gearbox that will get tiring after awhile having to hit every gear changing down or up and cannot simply go from 5th to 2nd gear for example. Lastly, reverse gear mods are always an issue (read expensive and problematic) with bike engine installations. You guys are lucky to get that gem of a motor with box, looms etc for only 2.5k. In my country its scarce as chicken teeth at a breakers yard and the other day one was for sale without any extras for the equivalent of 6.5k English pounds:( |

Don't disregard the zzr 1400 either, apparently they feel really torquey even in a seven. That's what's going in mine when I get bored of the 9r motor.
Im sure as well there would be a massive weight advantage going for the bike engine so therefore better handling as well. |

Mazda with extra go faster bits because would cost a lot less so you get more smiles per mile as not cost so much to do.

Think i've made up my mind to go with the S2000, when i upgrade its got to be a mega machine. The bike engine would be awesome but would be a lot of hard work with normal driving and probably get sick of the constant gear changes and pitch of the screaming engine. The S2000 seems the ideal engine for the roadster. Going to find a garage with one in and give a test drive for final decision. Thanks for the input.....Andrew |
Why not Mazda/Duratec 2.5 / 3.0 V6 with mazda 6 speed box and show what the new chassis can do, just a thought. :D

Honda S2000 all the way, suits the roadster perfectly in my opinion, light, powerful, 6 gear box, lots of revs but not excessive torque low down. shame you may have to go aftermarket with the ecu but I think the DTA S60 ecu comes with a base map for the S2000 and supports all the engine sensors with no calibration. I'm having second thoughts about a turbo in a roadster too.

The Honda S200 used well errrr the s200 engine:D It's one of those fancy vtec type devices made by the devil:D

Here is a good one for you all,local to me is a well known german car specialist who even gets the dealers in to sort their problems out and has invested mega bucks in diagnostic gear,in comes a J reg scirroco and they are all stumped as how to alter the mixture on the "Carb",they had to call in one of the lad's dad to sort it.
What is the world coming too......... Technology ? :rolleyes: Back to thread,what about tb's and a head change instead of ripping the lump out and fit emerald or the like,should give decent power. |

Hmmmmm. As most of you know I sold my roadster and used the money to buy an XJR. This kind of got me thinking. The Jag V8 engine is actually very light, as is the Merc 5 speed auto trans (yes, I know, but bear with me). My car has been lightly tuned to about 420 BHP, in the very big Jag it does the 0-60 dash in 5 seconds and storms the 0-100 in about 11. Top speed when derestricted is 180. I am told it is a fairly simple matter to up it to about 500 brake.
Now, I don't know if that engine would fit or whether it could be mated to a manual box but I wouldn't mind trying :D You can get a decent Jag v8 engine for about 350, an auto box would be about the same albeit totally useless for a roadster. Failing that the Honda would seem like a great choice. Dave. |

hi spud - it seems you have made your mind up about the s2000 engine which is good
but make sure the power you expect is the power you will get or you will end up doing the modified route to that which is an expensive route. with regards to the hayabusa 1. the bhp figure from new is about 175, not '200' [less any loss.] 2. driving the car - there is very very little loss of torque with the busa i have noticed - if you drive it correctly you should be in the right gear anyway!! 3. the sequential box is a dream!! on full throttle shifting it just clicks into gear with very little lift off at all even without a quick shift. 4. the reverse boxes are shit - plain and simple but you can go the starter motor route which works very well. 5. weight - the whole engine and box weighs in less than the weight of a s2000 engine alone 6. reliability - DONT FIDDLE WITH THE ENGINE if you do you risk it going bang - they are designed to be run in a bike as you know and right on what is very close tolerances - leave it alone and it will be ok in standard form. 7. performance - best mod for any car has got to be - - - - suspension set up! worth 100 bhp any day. theres not many cars get away from my car the only one i had pass me was a 911 GT3 [with 450+ ponies] and i wasnt watching :rolleyes: if your gonna use the car a lot on motorways - car engine - it can get tiring in a bike car but back roads - see ya! :cool: |
Turns out its dead easy to make the S2000 engine run on the standard ECU ;) you need the engine loom and the under dash loom complete with the PGMFI relay
if you go down the s2000 route give me a shout and il tell you were to connect the wires, you dont need to touch the engine loom and you need about 30 wires from the under dash loom tilly |
