I've been toying with this idea for about 8 months and I've now got the means to do it. Would any body be interested in a 0.8-1mm mild steel fuel tank fitted with a new sierra sender unit with a one way non return vent , fully leak tested to fit either the book rear tub or the SSC GRP one? The sierra unit feeds and returns from the top and should be just plug and play if using the sierra clocks. All tanks will be bent to shape in one piece with 2 baffles with a 45-50mm fill hole and every part will be TIG welded.
If there is enough interest I'll do two sizes ie short run and longer range in both book size and GRP. Price will depend on orders but should be around £70-90.
Please don't start the ali Vs steel debate we all know the pros and cons of both either you are interested or you are not , I can do ali tanks they will be £300 each.
There will be no minium order with this as every thing will be done in house although the more orders there are the cheaper they will become.

Sounds like a good idea Phil, there's a lot of people struggle in locating fuel tanks for the roadster and to fit them with the sender is a helpful move.

I recently spent a fair amount of time researching fuel tank suppliers and I was consistantly told not to use Mild steel as it rusts most of the suppliers I talked to recommended Stainless or Ally only

Mild steel does indeed rust but I made my own tank from mild steel 2 years ago now and its still like new

The sheet was very clean though and the exterior was powder coated

I had the sender out a couple of weeks ago and the inside is looking good

Ally tanks definately are more appropriate than steel but they can be costly in comparison, steel does the job if done correctly just like it does in lots of production cars that see more miles and winter months than our roadsters ever will!

Got to say that i build my own tank from mild steel 2 years ago to similar to the book dimemsions.
Painted in red oxided and hammerite and it looks just as good as it did the day it was fitted and was pretty cheap compared to buying an aluminum one.
Thinking about it now, the only change i would consider would be larger.

Have a look at my powder coating system group buy saving 40quid ish on your own system at only 83 quid delivered still spaces left so get your name on the list

That looks quite nifty Phil.

Kinda thinking that the angle on the filler might assist when it comes to fitting the filling stations pump nozel in :)

Some sort of sump would be a good idea as in normal fuel tanks where the fuel sender sit's otherwise there may be feed problems even with baffles if the use of oe sender unit is intended.

Swirl pot is a totally different item seperate to tank and involves a low and high pressure pump to feed and return fuel.

on an injection engine it works by having a regulator releaving the fuel pressure at the far end of the fuel rail back to the tank down the return line.

the fuel is then pumped to the engine from the sump and returned back to it so only the amount used by the engine need to enter the sump trough the hole in the bottom of the tank.
as you brake and go round corners the fuel stays in the sump
a swirl pot type is simmular but seprate to the tank fed by a smaller carb style eletric pump keeping it full of fuel and is used where ther is no room for a sump or as a retro fit to a normal carb car

I have built tanks for off roaders in the past that had problems with the fuel getting away from the pick up <sumped or not> , going up really steep hills for to long or racing round in circles had the fuel leaving the end of the pickup pipe for long enough to cause the fuel pump to cavitate.What we did was to have a rubber tube pickup dropping into the tank with a small weight on the end and where ever the g force took the fuel the pickup pipe followed. Early aircraft had
something like it to fly upside down .

Found this one on Ginetta G20 tank,hole in the bottom plate of tank and sump welded over the hole with feed and return in it,crude but effective.

There will be no group buy of fuel tanks or any other products in future. I've offered discounted products to the this forum before and been called a leach that feeds from the needs of car builders. When I have parts to offer you will find them on ebay.
