Carbon products

Hi guys,

Having taken sunday off (first day off since boxing day:eek: ) I decided to have some fun with carbon fibre. I have just added a carbon fibre dash to the shop, with more products to come soon such as bonnet and flyscreen. I have put the dash up at £95 plus postage, (free postage for forum members, just select free pickup then add username to comments box)

I also have the prototype, which I dont feel is good enough to sell at full price. Its ok but the weave has gone a bit wavy. Looking for £50 plus postage for that pm for details.

Sorry for the crap photos, i must get a decent camera!:(

Regards

Nathan

The dash looks really good, a set of carbon sill protectors would be nice as it will hide the join between the side panel and chassis rail.

vmax1974 7th February 2012 10:45 AM

Looking really good

My opinion of carbon is that there should be a few small defects shows its the real stuff

Well done front wings next maybe

maxubar 7th February 2012 09:28 PM

Looking really nice.

Just one question.

How can we give that extra gloss to the carbon dash? giving a coat of varnish or there is enough thickness of resin to be polished (If that's possible)?

Thanks

Ps i would love to have a set of front and rear carbon wings... Are you planning to have them made? :D

Gear Monkey 7th February 2012 09:48 PM

Carbon side panels would be cool...Come to think of it carbon everything would be even cooler :D

Davidbolam 7th February 2012 11:13 PM

That looks really good. Theres another thing on my shopping list...

Would be interested in Carbon cycle wings

shh120m 8th February 2012 09:47 AM

spent untill 10pm in the workshop last night catching up on some orders so had a bit more fun before i went home, didnt come out great but it is a prototype. Epoxy resin is evil:mad:

The finished article must weigh less than 50gram, but very stiff. They will require edge trimming though as the edges are very thin. Ive got alot of orders to get through in the next week, so its gonna be a week or two before i get to improve the finish and play with bonnet and arches so watch this space....

Eternal 8th February 2012 10:01 AM

Interesting.... Looking good. Will need to find some arches that will fit 225/45/18 on front and 275/45/18 on rear. Think this is something you can do? Heh

My plan was to try and do my whole roadster in carbon so you might just be the man to come to :-)

shh120m 5th May 2012 06:10 PM

Ive abandoned trying to do the aeroscreen, as its damn near impossible to push the fabric into the tight angle at the bottom, without distorting the weave too much, and the vac bag doesnt pull in tight enough either, so il have to make a new mould to do the aeroscreen. That might be one for the mx5 build later on.

Ive got dashboards and cycle wings down to a fine art now though. The edges of the dash and cycle wings can be done in any color. I really wanted to try some side panels for my own car, but iv been too wimpy about wasting expensive cloth and epoxy!, just in case i bugger it up, but im gonna give it a go now iv been commissioned to make a set for the teamtrain car.

Heres a couple of pics of the dash and cycle wings, iv now worked out how to effectively mask the gel, so i can put in any sort of pattern/striping.

Dam nathan they looking good will be getting a set for mine one I get to that stage

By the way have you got them chassis plates in yet

SeriesLandy 5th May 2012 06:53 PM

They do look great, saw them on eBay a couple of weeks ago.
It's nice to see that they are slightly different with the coloured gel.

When you add the cycle wings to your NTS web site i will order them and the diffuser at the same time.

It would be good if you did a flat panel, so we could use it to cover the top of the boot area to.

I put them in the store section under carbon products the other day. Flat panel is a good idea as a tub cover. Im gonna do some tommorow as im taking the day off, just need to see if they will fit in the oven.

motomaniac 6th May 2012 02:25 PM

saw em on yer website.. they look very nice indeed...

Johno 7th May 2012 08:39 PM

Hi Natahan,
Glad to see your'e back on here...:D
Nice work going on there but shouldn't it be 18 rated or only be allowed to be viewed after 10.00pm ish because that is damm sexy...

(I hope my missus don't see this post...LOL)

Johno

shh120m 8th May 2012 07:11 PM

haha,

I couldnt stay away

Your right though, i do get a little twitch when im working on them:p

Iv sourced a great discount on a 100m roll of 200gsm twill and 75kg of epoxy today, which will enable me to drop the price quite significantly. To justify buying materials in that quantity i would need to shift quite a few units so i was thinking of putting together an "austerity package"

This would include:

Carbon dash
Pair of carbon wheel arches
Flat carbon panel for boot lid, to keep price down and add a bit more stiffness due to the direction of the weave the flat and panel will be epoxy gel/carbon twill/epoxy resin as per usual but will be one layer of carbon backed up with 3 layers of glassfibre matting so structurally speaking this will be "cosmetic" carbon. Il do this with the dash aswell The current price works out at

Price all in delivered uk:

£250 with black edges on wheelarches and bottom of dash or
£260 with colour of choice on edges

Just as a comparison, in grp, posted these would work out at about £195

Would this be of interest to anyone?

motomaniac 8th May 2012 08:01 PM

hi , erm, nathan... will you be open on saturday morning??... thinking of popping in about 11 ish to have a look at your stuff, if thats ok... do you have a shop there??.. or is it just the workshop???...

chrisponter 8th May 2012 08:18 PM

I'd definitly be interested when the time came nathan.

shh120m 8th May 2012 08:25 PM

Yes im in every day,
Would be nice to see another human being:D
Please dont expect anything more than a messy workshop with a 90% finished car, and if you want a coffee, please bring a mug and some milk;)
Dont worry about the toilet though, its alot better than spuds old one!

If anyone else fancies popping over i could bring the bbq to work, depending on weather and if handyandy can come and cook, you dont want any of my "swarf burgers" ha

motomaniac 8th May 2012 09:43 PM

lol... nice one, itll just be a bit of a flying visit, will have the wife and kid in tow, so wont be too long, otherwise my ears will bleed from moaning...... messy workshop.. nice... will feel at home.lol.. just wanna come and bend yer ear , still aint got work yet, so cant buy owt at the moment.... booo .. knowing my luck, summat else will turn up and i wont get there...

CTWV50 8th May 2012 10:00 PM

Nice work, maybe I'll upgrade in the future. :)

Tatey 8th May 2012 10:09 PM

Nathan, would it be possible for you to do the more slimline cycle wings in carbon? I much prefer the look of these to the wrap around type.

I would be very interested in the dash wheel arches and bootlid. How much would you charge for the following:

Nose cone - GRP - Red
Bonnet (small bulge) - GRP - Red
Scuttle - GRP - Red
Rear Wheel arches - GRP - Red
Aero Screen - GRP - Black
Rear diffuser - GRP - Black

Slimline cycle wings - Carbon
Dash - Carbon
Boot panel - Carbon/fibreglass

I'd be able to pick them up, but it would be a little while before I ordered, say a couple of months at the most I think.

Also just as an idea would it be possible to have some threaded studded embedded into the cycle wings so that you don't need to drill them/have some ugly fasteners showing?

Simon

tkpm 9th May 2012 05:28 PM

Dam i only need the boot lid, cycle wings and a diffuser.

Terry

Tilly819 9th May 2012 08:19 PM

looks good, what process are you using to make the parts, gel coat wet lay then vacuum bag, or are you doing infusion?

tilly
