Rackless

I was looking at steering racks today and was going for a quick rack. I was also looking at the rack extensions and wondered if the company that makes the rack and pinions kits could supply them the right length and poss do away with the extensions . So I located the company that knocks them out Kiley Clinton and they said they can do it. Now its price driven on quantities so who would be interested in a rack and pinion the right length so I can give him some idea on amounts.

Great idea would they be able to do it for the mx5 build

iirc thay can do conversion kits as well track rods in any length too suit escort racks too in norm or hd so no extensions are needed when i enquired with them after i found out my new old stock mk2 rack was a mk1 rack lucky i sold it for 3x what i payed for it and picked up a std mk2 recon for 15quid :D
i cant rember if thay could do a moded rack length to to suit correct the book spec so bump stear is right

I'd definitely be interested in the info Bob, although nowhere near needing it yet.

Just for clarity and you may well be aware of this but the rack is of a fixed length at each end is the track rod arm with a ball joint which is fixed to the rack, this ball joint centre should be transected by a line drawn down from the inner top wishbone mounting to the bottom wishbone mounting this correctly sets bump steer, this is the critical measurement, when that is correct you can lengthen or shorten the track rod end to fit the steering arm on the hub.

Exactly that. The escort rack in the perfect world of dialing out bump steer needs to be shorter< cant remember the exact amount> . That combined with the arms needing to be longer made me think sod it call the company that makes the quick racks and get them made the right length with the correct length arms. At least you end up with the correct rolled threads in the track rod ends not cut ones like with the extensions .They are working out a price.

Edit . he did explain that the racks go off for heat treatment after machining so mods need doing prior to that so its not a home chop job really.

Right dimensions

As Robo said above,

I'd definitely be interested if the body is shortened to the right length with longer track rods.
If the price is right!!!!!!!!! Possible Group buy???????

The Escort rack is about 560 mm long between ball joints, but it needs to be 533 mm (page 75).

Right then chaps, the rack and pinion made to the right length -27mm is £110 but you will still need to buy an old escort rack and two new gaitors so you can use the housing. A few different ratios available as well 2.2,2.4,2.9 Fitting is easy. The extended arms < exact length to be decided cos I am confused:o > are £25 each. all this is suject to making up an order for 10 minimum. He never mentioned the vat so I will check to see if its inclusive. £160 + some gaitors is not bad.

Thoughts and comments please.

Bob

Seems quite expensive.

Is it that bad when you take off the price of the rack extensions:confused: Alga I will pop the question on the left hand drive one, what ratio do you want?

Rob,
I'm trying to get in my head exactly what you get with this kit. My car is already OTR using a 2.4. Im trying to work out wether its worth the expense to get the correct geomatry or not ? I don't think the car has noticeable bump steer but i may be be wrong

robo 5th September 2012 10:53 AM

The last car I built was sent away for the full monty suspension set up. The difference to drive was night and day., and I thought it was good before it went in. So I will go for it and do like johno has done and make all four corners adjustable, get the rack right and be a happy bunny.:)

Something quick, 2.1 or 2.4... Although I'm not certain I'll participate, I've paid ~150 pounds for the RallyDesign LHD quickrack already...

vmax1974 5th September 2012 08:29 PM

I could still be interested if they are the right length and threads for the mx5 track rod ends

The V8 Files 5th September 2012 10:59 PM

I'l be in the maybe bracket, need to figure out the chassis first :)
