How to get a chassis number from dvla

Ok, I had my chassis number come through from dvla today, the numbers are really weird. My number starts : dvlaswa ! How weird, I thought that there was a formula to this stuff ? anyway, to my point. If you require a chassis number, write a short letter about the car, similar to the one in the amendments, and post it to their new office :

VC15A/MASET
DVLA
SWANSEA
SA6 7JL

This is the direct address, they take about 6 weeks to reply, so don't panic. When they send back your chassis number, they also include all the forms to get your creation on the road, without speaking to 10 different people, with 10 very different answers. I hope this is of use to you all !

I have just rang dvla again, & they have said that all chassis numbers must be issued by them, & randomly created vin numbers are no longer accepted. So Stot, you may have to remove your chassis plate. Just thought that I would share the comments from dvla:)

I Received my chassis number last week, I used the standard letter, sent it to Cardiff local office and received a letter 4 weeks later from Swansea starting DVLASWA along with all the forms required for registration.

Like I said , it's a brand new system now Ash, we are not allowed to make up our own chassis numbers now either, only manufacturers can do it. That's why I put the telephone number & the new address up , as there is that much red tape around the subject, just thought I would clarify the situation, to make the paperwork easier.

the start of thease SABTVR numbers where tied to a local dvla office from what i was told by my local office.

all chassis numbers issued from a dvla local office start the same digits and my iva tester could tell straight off where my chassis number was issued from as it was local office to his testing station.

there all done centrally now so maybe diffrent now?

LVLO used to use that number for all rebuilt after accident cars that were written off prior to the use of Cat c and d etc
