Oil in my oil burner
 

I had my car serviced on Thursday. It's a 2008 passat 2.0 tdi 170. 81,000 miles. My question is I went to check the oil yesterday morning and it's black in colour. Is it possible for the oil to discolour this quickly or have the garage either "forgot" to change it or simply haven't bothered. Would any remaining oil in the sump make it so black so quickly?

I have checked the air filter and this has been done so they have obviously done something to it.

dont let someone else work on your car you are clearly skilled enough to do it yourself and by now probs more skilled than the average quick fit fitter althouh most of us have forgot more than those lot would ever know

Whereabouts did you get it serviced? I am now in the trade so will see if any of my colleagues have any inside info on the garage. I wouldn't have thought it would discolour that quickly at all. Sounds like not being changed to me

Quite normal for a diesel. I was shocked when I first did an oil change on a diesel engined car, the new oil was black within minutes of running it. It's to do with the sulphur - see this:https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/questio...8030430AA9bIlR

If you think about how much oil is left in the actual engine it will get dirty quite quickly,carbon is what blackens diesel engine oil.

If you are ever stuck I have 6 ramps in my man cave.;)

Sulphur is yellow but it turns oil black. It also smells incredibly like an eggy fart when burnt, but that's another matter:D
I think "sulfur" is the American spelling - is it not? These are the people that park on the driveway and drive on the parkway and are therefore not to be trusted.

Whatever it is that turns the oil black (and opinion is divided in this matter), our troubled poster has nothing to worry about, it's a well known fact that oil in a diesel engine goes black almost immediately, it's not an indicator that the oil was not changed.

Sulphur has been reduced in diesel for a long time and rape seed oil is shoved in for good measure,had this compliant many times over the last 40 years with the same question "have you done it".

If you put the stick across the palm of your hand you can normally see its not fully black and comes off fairly easily and not a black skidmark on your hand,dirty diesel oil is a mare to get off your skin,for my money its a combination of sulphur aiding the combustion producing the carbon to contaminate the oil by piston blowby.

Sulfur is the IUPAC spelling and has been for some time.
