Zetec Silvertop 1.8 - Questions
 

Well today I picked up a Zetec Silvertop 1.8 from someone 35 minutes away from me, it has done about 70,000 miles and is a runner, as he had it running in his car for a few weeks before he got his hands on a 2.0. He sold it to me for £40 :D.

I'll be going down the bike carbs (ZX9R as they work straight out of the box) and megajolt. I know i'll need to fabricate my own inlet manifold to get it all to work.

I've got a few questions about it, it didn't come with any ancillaries, so what can I use from my dead CVH engine? Can I use the starter motor, alternator, flywheel and clutch? I will be using a Type 9 gearbox as well.

Also what is normally done for the exhaust manifold for this engine? Will I need to make my own or is there a cheap and easy solution for it?

Finally, I read a while ago that there are problem with the thermostat housing with this engine as it doesn't fit in the roadster. This engine hasn't come with one, so I was wondering what is normally done to fix the problem?

I would, but its an hours drive, he's at Stoneleigh and its a brand new blacktop, so I'm not sure if it is entirely the same.

Right i've just done a bit of searching on the forum, no idea why I didn't do it first. But it looks like I can use the starter motor and alternator from the CVH. The thermostat housing can be sorted out in a few different ways, I think I will be going for the method of moving the engine 25mm forward to give the extra room, meaning the standard thermostat housing can be used.

I am still unsure if I can use the 1.8 cvh flywheel, but I am sure someone will be able to tell me shortly.

I also havent found an easy solution for the exhaust manifold.

I use the 1.8 zetec engine whit the standard thermostaat housing no problem here:p I use also use the standard flywheel.

Dont quote me on this but im sure you can use the cvh flywheel and probably the starter as well for the exhaust there are diy manifold kits on the bay for £99 from pepper perfomance as recomended on here tother day carb manifold is pretty easy if your handy with a hacksaw and welder (wich you should be if you built your own chassis lol)

I would have answerd a bit earlier but I sort of had a power nap :o :o

Almost certain that you will be able to use the CVH flywheel, on the downside you will need to fit a trigger wheel on the front crank pulley because the CVH flywheel is not drilled for a crank sensor ;)

You may be lucky & find the the front pulley from the CVH fits on the Zetec crankshaft !! ( CVH pulley has trigger wheel )

The CVH sump will fit to the Zetec engine, might save you the hassle of altering the Zetec's alloy one :)

Looked at a fair few engine installs at Stoneleigh yesterday .... Qute a few had the engine forward enough to use the Zetec's thermostat housing, as is.

Best off using the standard zetec flywheel os you have the VR sensor and can use a standard Mondeo clutch. Makes things much easier.

Cheers for that coozer. I was planning on buying a new clutch for the car before I get it on the road, would the following 2.0 blacktop flywheel and clutch kit fit a 1.8 silvertop engine without much issue?

Also is the £80 price tag an all right price? I've never had to buy a new clutch so I'm unsure of what's a bargain and what's not at the moment.

No no, that's a 2L flywheel, puts the clutch contact face to far back for thetype 9 clutch arm, also hit and miss whether it will fit under a type 9 bellhousing, some do, some don't, mine didn't. The 1.8 flywheel is much thinner and lighter and a straight forward fit with the type 9 (with a Capri 133 bearing)
