Age related or Q plate

I'm not sure what to do?
inorder to use the age related plates what do I need to use of the donor as I'm using my Escort engine but other donor parts I bought here and there?

Also I always thought it was cheaper to insure a "Q" plate is this true?

Cheers

Hi Dean

To give yourself the best chance of an age related number plate, ideally, you would use a single donor.
The impotant thing is to keep your paperwork in tip top order .... Donor cars V5 on SORN & registered to you is a good starting point ;)

That's not to say that you can't swap some parts for new ones or like for like.

In my own case, all of the parts from a single donor exept the engine .... In theory I should still qualify for an age related plate ( Issued under the points system )
That said, I know that some local DVLA offices can be difficult to deal with & have different views as to what is allowed ( In spite of the information contained in their own web site !!?? ) :)

I'll request an age related plate & if I am given a Q, i'll not loose any sleep over it :)

with regards to the V5 i'm only using the steering rack with wheel and storks, alloy wheels and engine inc loom and then i'm going to seel the shell (not to the scrappie) as it is a 3 door escort.

what would i do then regarding the V5?

Hi Deano,

To get age related plates you need the original or exact replacement bodyshell and two major components OR, pretty much all the donor parts from a single vehicle (any part replaced much be exact same as fitted to donor), in the case of the haynes roadster. You need to score at least 8 points and without using the original bodyshell then you need to use all the parts front the donor including engine to get the required 8 points.

FWIW there is no practical value in an age related plate, particularly with regards to kit cars, so I can never work out why people are so hung up on them....
A Q plate will allow you to build the car with the bits you want to use straight away and not have to bugger the car about afterwards.

Is there actually any issue with having a Q plate?
From what I can tell, it's actually a lot less hassle getting a Q plate, but no real loss.

When it comes to selling, anyone who is capable of looking after all the paperwork required to register an age plate, should be able to look after documentation that proves the age of components in a Q plate, so there shouldn't be any loss in value there either.

Unless you wanted to fit a personalised plate afterwards, is there anything bad about the 'dreaded Q plate?'
I'm imagining it wouldn't affect insurance?

Just speculation, as I'm thinking about starting my build with the intention of Q plating it for ease :)

The private plate transfer is the only issue I can think of.

personally I prefer a Q plate as I'm not building a replica I could understand if someone wanted to build a replica Ferrari of Lambo or if they wanted a personalised plate.
I know it sound wieird but i think its the final peice for a kit car

Age related plates arn't transferable! so I would assume the private plate thing not possible on kit cars.....

My understanding is that you can have a plate that is the same age, or older than, an age related plate, that's it's only Q plates that can't be transferred. Not certain of that, but I've heard it a few times.
