gearbox problem
 

When I bought the donor car I took it for a test drive. I found that reverse could be selected instead of first. It's a type 9 - 5 speed gearbox. Normally to select reverse you would push left then down and up into reverse.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to rectify this?
Any help appreciated :)

there's a metal locking thing in the way, may be damaged. or the detent spring is wornout.

There used to be a circlip on the gearlever that kept the rubber under compression to keep the detent from working untill you push it down.
Later levers have a washer with two crimps holding a washer over the rubber doing the same job.

Short shift kit get's rid of all this .

I was just about to make the same comment, I have a short shift fitted to my type 9 box, when selecting reverse I still have to "push" to the left & slide stick up to engage reverse, no longer need to push "down", takes a little getting used to but I,m now confident when selecting reverse or 1st.

So Bill, maybe your box has a short shift already fitted?

If you are worried that your in reverse not first, pop it into second then straight up into first. Then pull away.

If these are ok then it's likely to be a very spongy gearlever bush.

Rally Designs do the quick shift kit reasonably priced. They are certainly worthwhile and if you get the competition one it does away with the rubber damper on the stick whilst shorting the throw on the stick. Makes the gear change much more positive and with a shorter action.

Makes it feel more racey instead of tractory, same as changing the steering wheel.
