fire protection for the petrol tank
 

has anyone any idea of how i could protect the tank from catching fire from whatever reason. i just think that if the tank goes or catches fire the thought of a little protection around it would give some piece of mind

Could wrap it in a fire blanket, but i think if the tank went up i would leave the car and leg it. i cant see any reason why a tank would go up unless it leaked or gave off fumes.

Fire is more likly to start in the engine bay and work it's way backwards, even so the tank would have to be leaking badly to give of enough vapour ( petrol fluid is not flamable ) to cause an explosion.

If your realy worried then a plumbed extinguisher with automatic release is the best option.

1.best bet is to make sure your fittings are good - well made.

2.make sure the tank has some form of collision defence - ie brace bars around it if possible
3. you can add foam to the inside to soak up the fuel - if it did get split the foam reduces the speed the fuel comes out - reducing the chances of explosion etc
4. you could get a plumbed extinguisher fitted - a hand held one is ok but it MUST be fitted in a bracket securely

5. finally make sure you can get out in 10 seconds flat (if i remember rightly the time set for drag drivers to get out saw it on the tv at bonnville or summink - might be wrong tho - lol:rolleyes: )
