help engine numbers

im in a bit of a pickle again got me motor back in the back of the estate and droped it into the garage last night
went to clean up the engine no (its a 1.8 silvertop zetec) and i can get the engine type code RDB=1.8/105bhp and the first two letters PP (year)= april 93? of the engine code but little rust monsters have made the rest unreadable :( or
what do i do?

any ideas on tricks to either to make it easy to read the orignal or date of the casting no.s
i have already cleaned off the top/flat bit with a bit of wetand dry on a small flat block to hopfuly leave the rust in the imprint of the rust but its pitted and i dont want to take it all off leaving it plain flat
thort i maybe able to get it from the orignal cars reg from ford IF i can get it off the seller

Try the dirty finger and paper trick, lay the thin paper over the place where the number is and rub a not too dirty finger over it and with luck it will reveal it..

Scotchbrite may do it as not too abrasive

Used to do it with chassis numbers before the days of MOT computerisation, too lazy too write them in full.

If you've got the V5 and its the original engine, the engine number is part of the chassis number (was on mine anyway).

May be of help:)

i know what the no. should be the problem is the orignal is unreadable as the place where it should be is pitted from rust
looks like i can only just make out the first 3

If you know what the number should be take the evidence with you, IVA are practical people and will look at your proof favourably, DVLA may ask for it to be restamped at a garage with written proof

poped into my local vosa iva test station yesterday just to see where i stand on enginey numbers and had a chat with the iva tester who could not bleave my engine no was unreadable and asked how old should it be?
i told him april 93 he than asked what car it was from and told him fiesta xr2 1800 dohc he said well it had a cat fitted originaly on the car so regardless of block age it would need a cat fitted any ways!
i cant beleve even my local iva tester isnt up to date on this but he would be happy with a proof of date from casting numbers if that was any help
asked about blank block numbers on genuine replacements both at ford dealer and vosa both dont think thay all come with engine stamped so is this a myth then?
