Argh !!
Whilst trying to locate the dipstick I accidentally dropped a length of copper pipe into the sump. Question is, do I have to split the gearbox from the engine to remove the sump ? Its a CVH.
Cheers Peter |
That is a real downer Peter :(
No, you shouldn't have to remove the gearbox from a CVH engine to get the sump off :) Just remove the dust shied for the lower part of the bellhousing & the sump shoud come away without any problem. |
Brill Ronnie
I assume that I take the bolts out from between the bellhousing and the engine and slide the plate up to get at the 2 small bolts. Cheers Peter |
Yes Peter, just remove the dust cover retaining bolts, cant remember if it is just the 2 bolts or 3.
Once unbolted you should be able to jiggle the cover a little & remove it out of the way. You should then be able to get to the 2 tricky bolts at the rear of the sump, normally I use my long 1/4" drive extension bars to get to those ( Quite awkward to get to ) Easy to do once you get the knack ;) |
Just finished - jobs a good un.

Now don't go dropping anything in there again  Some muppett sitting at this keyboard once dropped a M6 nut into an uncovered inlet manifold once .... Yep, that inlet valve was fully open :o:o If I had half a brain back then, I would have backed the engine off a bit & tried to remove it with a magnetic pick up stick !!?? Done it the hard way & removed the head  |

Turned it over to clear the redex, decided to leave the rags in place to stop it spraying everywhere. 2 get blown off and land on the floor, 2 vanish completely. He thinks nothing of it and re-assembles it, but it won't start. At this point he calls me to come have a look at it. I managed to lend a borescope off a local garage, had a look inside the cylinders, and sure enough, 2 of them contained some very mashed rags. Absolutely had to take the head off to get them out. |

i got called into our local shipyard once to have a look at an 8 cylinder gardner standby set that would not run right in a survey ship Several guys had had a look done filters/lift pump/injectors the usual sort of thing then out of desperation we were called. i stood scratching me nuts and me mate rubbin his chin totally flummoxed after checkin what had already been checked and going a bit more in depth and goin nowhere for ages. until i found a teatowel had been sucked up the front air intake never ever found out how a tea towel ended there but it caused a blooming great bill and a lot of embarrassment all round how do you justify a bill for two blokes 8 hours etc to pull a teatowel out of an engine ..........doh cheers les g |
