carbed bike engines megajolt?
I'm looking to build some off road go karts to use round the farm so I've been looking at 7-13hp honda engines,clutches etc. Looking at the prices I then thought about 400-600cc bike engines and found 600 carbed bandit engines with clutches and gear boxes for the same money. How ever I know next to nothing about bike elastictricery as we've only ever mounted bike lumps not made them run.
So what I want to know is can you use megajolt on bike engines or am I better off using the original loom etc? |
Personaly, I would say use the original bikes ECU if possible.
That's going to save £300 - £500 right from the outset. Having said that, I have not had a lot of personal dealings with modern bike ECU's but imagine that they are not as complicated as car ones !!?? I guess it all boils down to if you want to use the engine on its stadard equipment ( Fueling etc ) Going slightly off track .... It never ceases to amaze me, just how much the Honda industrial engines cost :eek: ;) A few years back, I wanted to replace a FUBAR engine on a small cement mixer .... It was cheaper to actualy just go & buy a new mixer fitted with the same engine !!?? .... How the hell does that work :rolleyes: Bunged an electric motor on it & still going strong :D |
I agree with Ronnie, stick with the standard bikes ignition, saves money & if you have all the gubbins should be fairly straight forward to get working ,
Tho I think a Bandit engine in a "Fun Kart" would be wowee scarily quick :eek: , they are not a huge BHP engine ( roughly 60 to 80 ish BHP ) but in a Kart that weighs next to nowt it,ll be warp factor stuff, fun tho :D cheers andy |

I still have a brand new 50cc mini-moto engine tucked away in the cupboard .... Oh, also 4 wheels & a set of small coil over shocks :rolleyes: Grand children grew up before I got round to making a cart ( Read I took too long ) :o :o |
Thanks for your input guys think I'll just keep it simple with the bits of wire given that the loom and ECU can be had for £50. The kids go kart design started out simple with a solid axle, second hand 7hp engine and one rear brake and now looks more 'rage' buggy ;) due to if we build it with independant rear suspension we won't bend the axle, any body know how these tea break design seasions can be avoided? :rolleyes:
