Finally made my mind up on engine, emissions?

Morning all,

You may remember I was intending on using an R1 engine for my build. After some thought about reverse box, LSD, dry sump etc. I have decided against it due to costs. I gotta be realistic, a roadster on the road is better than an unfinished one due to finances.

Anyway I have decided to try and track down a pre Aug 1995 2.0 silvertop zetec and run it on a bike carb and ecu set up from Chester sports cars (only a few miles away).

My query is that from what I have read on tinternet is that a pre 1995 zetec does not need a cat, and is easy to get through emissions.
However when reading the IVA manual (section 02B) it states that if the engine previously had a cat to test it as such. I believe 2.0 silvertops were fitted with a cat, or is it because they dont have the data in the analyser database/emissions book?
So, do I need a cat on my roadster if I fit the 2.0 zetec?

Another question. This might be a bit dodgy...
If I change the logbook for my donor to say the 2.0 zetec was fitted to the sierra, would they test it as a Sierra 1992 Sierra? Because the log book would show the zetec engine number?

mmm...........interesting:D

I see what you mean if you follow the IVA flow chart and you can get an exact match, but pre 95 cars were not subject to a cat test.

On mot gas testers there is a menu and it gives options for differing years.

I'm pretty sure the testers are wise to such moves as having a V5 altered, they would know that a sierra never had a zetec fitted by the factory.

What't the big issue with fitting a cat? If you are going to the expense of using bike carbs etc, then why not fit the engine with it's original injection system and cat for IVA then switch to bike carbs later?

If it's the looks your worried about then 7tips do a nice silencer with a cat built inside it.

Thanks aerosam.

Yeah, thought it was a bit cheeky to try and change the log book, but it may be worth a try.

The main issue I have with changing it later is I dont want to do it twice and have to change wiring, exhaust etc.. aswell as the looks

Would prefer to get it through on bike carbs first time round if I dont need a cat for IVA.

Hi mate, H.K.Williams in Ruabon did have silver top a couple of weeks ago, didnt pay too much attention to it, think it was in a Mondeo far end of the yard left hand corner, give them a bell see what they say

Drop me a reminder towards Friday and when I go too Ruabon at the weekend I will call in to the small breakers by the brickworks and see what they have and how much if you want

Many moons and the odd rainy day ago i built a natty Spondon/Harris stylee streetfighter. I made a jig and made the frame so no log book so thought ummm don't fancy a q plated bike so bought a DT125 frame and logbook for a few pennies, I changed the engine size from 123cc to 598cc and sent it off....nobbers sent it back with new engine capacity as 598cc so wahey my streetfighter not only had a number plate it was classed as a classic bike...coooool or what if a little naughty.

It's a shame that you can't use any 2.0L silvertop. Especially if a fellow forum member had a perfectly legitimate number kept from a pre 95 engine that got scrapped.;)

I'm a bit too far away from you but got a low mileage 1.8 Zetec on Ebay at the moment.
