Shaft Shortening Costs
 

Just wondering how much people are paying to get their propshafts shortened?

There's a propshaft manufacturer not far from me:

They've quoted £75+VAT to shorten my original shaft, or around £170-£220+VAT to make me a brand spanking new one (depending on what sleeve/flange I need on the ends).

Does that sound reasonable, or can I get my shaft shortened for less elsewhere?

Dont skimp in this deparment.A decent company will shorten and balance the assembly, be mindful that when in top gear its spinning faster than engine speed and if it breaks it could land in your lap. That would sting a bit! I have seen one come through the drivers floor of a range rover , not nice.

The place in Leeds seems pretty popular with people on here judging by the thread above, so I've emailed them for a price.

I was thinking I might just get mine shortened, but I'm tempted to get a new one made now. I don't like the idea of it breaking through the flimsy ali tunnel covers :eek:

Quite a lot of drag cars have saftey loops round their props, not a big job but for those of us who are going to twat their cars around a track its sound insurance. The below is not a good example as most have two.

Simple way to do it is just add a few extra 20x20 uprights along the tunnel.

I was about to have nightmares of the prop shaft appearing through the tunnel skin :eek:

dunning and fairbank £105 ex vat and postage for a all new shaft with rebuildable ends and grease points :)

I was going to diagonally brace the tunnel and save my legs from the prop. But also put in more braces on the bottom of the tunnel so it can't hit the ground either. I don't like upside-down motoring!:eek:

I think the less space you give the prop to rattle about in the better so really the loop as in my first post is probably the best way. 6" of gear tunnel is going to be a playground for a prop at 7000rpm.
