Always liked the look of these and the fact they lay away from the steering ect on the roadster.

If its any good they're a good motor but quiite tall/wide. If I remember correctly it was based on the old Vauxhall slant 4 job as fitted to 70s Victors/Bedofrd CFs/Magnums/Ventoras. Pretty much bomb proof and certainly grunty in Lotus twinc form, all alloy block and head if I remember correctly so not too heavy either.

A great engine choice if you

1. can find a runner at a decent price or
2. are enthusiastic about this type of engine and are prepared to spend out on a rebuild.

A mate of mine had one of these in his Esprit and it cost him a fortune to rebuild. He'd assumed it was mostly plain Vauxhall Slant Fan technology just with a Lotus twin cam head until he found the pistons, con rods and crank were all specialist Lotus parts. Getting hold of oversized forged pistons that would fit onto the existing con rods was particularly expensive.

The standard Vauxhall Slant Fan was not a bad engine especially in 2.3 litre form. Bomb proof bottom end because the thing was derived from a General Motors V8 just with one bank of cylinders removed- hence the slant.

Vauxhall Slant Four bomb proof bottom end Not:D :D Have blown up several...Design was loosly based on a GM V8 but no directly interchangeable parts. Poor lubrication system, weak crank and a block lacking stiffness which is why Lotus binned most of the vauxhall parts and made their own! then Vauxhall got busted for using mostly Lotus parts in their Rally Chevette:D :D

Chevette HS if memory serves, racing ones driven by Gerry Marshall in the Chunky Chicken livery "Little Bertha " and Big Bertha was another model in the Vauxhall marque in he late seventy's.

A mate had one in a talbot sunbeam and he was not kind to it at all. that thing punched well past its weight and lasted for years, he never did manage to blow it up.
