Steel type & online suppliers

Hi

I have been trying to source the steel for my chassis and looking at online suppliers such as the metal store and parkers etc.

Does it need to be ERW as I struggle to find this on some sites. Can I just use mild steel box?

Also has anybody already compared these types of suppliers and found the cheapest?

Regards

Not all online stores are kept up to date and don't always list what you want or need. best thing to do is find a steel stockist near you and give them a bell they don't bite.
I would go for either 1.6 or 2mm ERW as it folded to shape has flat sides, squarer corners and it is much easier to work with than 'Hot Roll section'.
A few days ago I payed £8.38 plus VAT for 6m length with 1.6mm wall.

Hot Rolled Section or HRS/C is extruded and although cheaper will be at least 2.5-3mm thick have rounded sides and large radious corners. It all so comes covered in a black scale that needs to be removed before it's welded.

You pays your money and make your choices.

Wher did you get that from because that sounds very cheap, every price I get is over £15+vat per length?

Ive just got an online quote for 7x6metre 25x25mm and 3x6metre 20x20mm, 2mm box section from Metals4u at Pontefract/Knottingley £212 delivered. Free delivery is included if u spend more than £75 or if in scotland its £150.

Is that reasonable or does that sound expensive?
