Sierra rear drum brake cylinders
I am in the process of refurbing my sierra rear drums before fitting to uprights....lots of rust, dust and siezed bits so I decided to check out the price of a couple of brake slave cylinders.......for the price of a couple of pints I could have a new set delivered to my door....and yes you guessed it ....from ebay
£4.40 delivered for both cylinders, so no heating/cooling,WD40, mole grips, brake spanners,cussing.......just a couple of new bolts, it was a complete no brainer, some things are just not worth the hassle for the sake of saving a few quid here and there. here is another cheapish set at just over £7 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2905508147...#ht_666wt_1085 |
I also chuck the old ones away in lieu of new ones...
Im in a fortunate position to buy spares directly from the importers for my business and paid ZAR32 (2.60 pounds) each and going to the spares retail outlets a rebuild kit cost more than that per unit! If the sleeve is pitted or worn, one is pissing against the wind trying reconditioning it. |
Wasn't there something around not using sierra cyclinders though in favor of slightly larger ones(21/22mm rings a bell) off something like an escort to get the brake bias right?

If you are using the original sierra setup like Gus & Adrian did, then you have to go from a sierra wheel cylinder to a smaller escort one.
Attached is a link to the page on Adrian's website which explains it all. http://www.tamarisktechnicals.com/pages/iva.html I think this only happens when using the larger rear drum setup from the 1.8 & 2 ltr cars. I believe the 1.6 sierra had smaller rear drums and therefore smaller wheel cylinders. HTH |
Thanks for pointing that out Dave....thankfully it is the 1.6 one I am using so should be ok.....phew

You can always fit the pressure balancing gizmo if like me you have the 1.8cvh.
I'm waiting til it has an MOT before deciding on this option |
Hi AJ apparently you are not allowed to use the brake proportionating valve for the IVA, which I find rather odd since it was part of the original vehicle.:(

DOOOH!:o :o :o :o

Mine and a couple of others passed iva fine with the larger drums
All my brakes were totally new and well beddded in |
