Stripped the engine down.
 
Well I finally got to move the engine into the new workshop at the weekend and pulled it to bits. I already knew that the head had been re-conned but I didn't know anything about the block. With the engine mounted on the engine stand I drained the oil and then turned it over to remove the sump.
My heart sank as when we turned the engine over something rattled inside.
Looked over it all and found a bolt that was lying around in the block.
Turned out it was the bolt for the oil pick-up pipe bracket. Result.
Further inspection shows new Crank, new big end shells main journals and a 50thou over size re-bore, oh and a new oil pump.
All for £100, including new clutch, alternator, ditributor and a type9 gearbox.
I should have done the lottery at the weekend

Thats a result. The odds of that happening are probably that of winning the lotto:) If they were sloppy enough to leave the pickup pipe bolt loose I would go over the whole thing just to be sure.

Its about to be stripped sent away for the block to be cleaned ready for painting. Then re-build will be meticulous, all laidout bolts marked when torqued etc.

A quick question guys, I have stripped most of the engine down, and I'm about too pull the valves from the head. My question is if the valves have been changed and the seats have been changed for hardened seats will there be any indicating marks to note,

On iron heads the seats are induction hardened as part of the head so there wont be any signs of a seat. The unleaded conversions are an insert thats pressed in and would be visible as exactly that. As far as the valves go most conversions include stainless valves and again are easy to tell apart from the originals.

Cheers for that hope to start removing valves on Wednesday evening and hope to have some more news then, I got to find out yesterday that the engine is a 1975 engine with the letter coding RE

Well guys just a quick up-date, the engine is 95% back together, the sump has been shortened and modified as has the oil pick up pipe. Im about to paint the sump and get that ready to go back on, I have a quick question for those who know Pintos' on the out put end of the crank the main seal is different to the other end as there are some small wedges that go into the block. My question is do these get trimmed flush or left proud as they are not mentioned in the haynes manual for the year of engine, which is 1975, any help please
