Pc help needed please
Hi guys, I'm currently having problems with my sky router (can't connect via LAN) but I also wanted to extend my wired network points in the house so I bought a 24port network switch off eBay.
Should I be able to just plug my devices in and them be given an ip straight away? When I plug in my laptop I instantly get the link, 100m and fdx lights lit but I can only get limited/ no connectivity in windows. Is there something wrong with the switch or my router? Thanks in advance. |
Right, probably have more questions than answers to start with
Can you connect via wireless? Eliminate the switch, if you plug lappy directly into router do you get an ip address? if not then you need to log on and check on the router that DHCP is enabled, i think it normally is by default, but its worth checking. If you have wireless connectivity you should be able to connect to your router via web page. and Check on the lappy - control panel, network setting, local area connection, Internet protocol (tcp/ip) click properties and check that its set to obtain an ip address automatically and not set to a static ip, same for dns. If your able to check the above and still no joy then its always worth rebooting the router. What Ethernet leads are you using? We can work with the switch after you get it working connected directly, but post up the model number, I'm guessing its unmanaged so should work out of the box. Bruce |
yep post up the make/model of the switch.
Are you getting a link between the switch and router ? Cheers TT |
Just thought of something else, what version of windows are you using?

The switch is a accton 3024c
My sky router is a bit knackered, but the sky monkeys said there is a fault on the line. The router stopped working properly on thurs, I can't connect with LAN but could via wireless and couldn't connect with my iPad. Reset it a million times and it started to work with the wireless again The switch I had connected straight to the laptop. Via a short (1m) normal not crossover cable. And it wouldn't aquire an address. On the router dhcp is on.(as standard) I can't check the laptop settings as I'm out at the second but I will when I get home Thanks for your help |
do you have the switch connected to the router?

port 24 has a mdi / mdi-X button.
Plug your cable between the switch and router into this port and then try it with the button pressed and un-pressed. |
so what is the purpose of the switch?
are you trying to use the laptop to connect other pc's on the switch back to the wi-fi on the router ? TT |
it negates the need to use a crossover between the router and switch, ie it switches that port it into uplink mode.
TT, I've only had a quick google on the switch but the specs I found suggested all ports were auto sensing. |
