if you want to do it your self, go for it, so much better sense of achievement once its finished, the steel box section shouldn't cost you more than around £100 as apposed to £350 for a kit, two days and you will have what looks like a chassis too,
as for the flat plates, cutting by hand is a nightmare, if you have a local laser cutters, go down and see if they will cut your bits out for you, also handy for other brackets you may need in the future, if you get the bulk cut in one go you should get a nice price
