The same way as it does on a manual I'd say. The crank position sensor is linked to the ECU to control spark or spark and fuel on a fuel injected engine. I don't believe it will have any other effect on an auto. You just need to be sure the pick up point on the torque converter is at the same point as it was on the flywheel. If not you can always mount a trigger wheel and sensor to the front bottom pulley. You can do a search on fitting megajolts or megasquirts to get some ideas .
