There are some rules in the IVA manual about petrol tanks and boots. In short the tank needs to be vented to outside, a luggage compartment has to be lockable, the lock has to meet IVA rules regarding exterior projections, the tank is not allowed to live in an enclosed boot space. I have a Westfield alloy tank in mine that holds about 4.5 gallons, if you were making your own tank you could get a much bigger one in there. If I fit an extinguisher it will live in the car between the seats so that either driver or passenger can grab it very quickly.
