If your planing the former then it will never be water tight, little short of chauking round all the joints it will leak to some degree. If you go for the later then just bond the roof section to the body work.
There was a car based on vauxhall parts with the engine mounted at the rear the name of it escapes me at mo but that had a square nose and a tessarosa style back end with a fixed roof and removeable gt40 type doors. I'll have a look around and see if I can find a pic or to.

That will be the Cyclone and was made in Blackpool and a very pretty car that was, sadly no longer made and the moulds went in the bin!!!!
There is a blue one that hillclimbs and sprints in the South West and damn quick it is too..
