I had the same question when i installed my brakes/running gear & it was to fit them so that the handbrake cable goes into the drum backplate from the forward part ( closest to the seat back panel ).

The routing of the cable past the diff will go in a gentle " S " shape thru & between the driveshaft & wishbones to the backplate & if you plan ahead you will only need to shorten one end of the cable ( i did it on the drivers side for no particular reason other than that was the way the car was parked in the garage ) but to do this you need to make small slots in the bracket above the diff where the handbrake sheath is attached to the car.....the slots allow the inner cable to be passed thru the said bracket which means you don,t have to cut the cable in half & then rejoin it at the handbrake lever end .

Anyways...thats how i did mine
