I can't think of any names at the moment, but there's a handful of propshaft manufacturers that will shorten it for around £100, or make you a brand spanking new one for around double that.
I was thinking Renault Clio radiator, but now you said polo it got me thinking!

As for the propshaft, surely if the weld is totally uniform, and profile is pretty flat, it should be fine. (given that its tacked on straight!!!! lol). Whats everyone else's thoughts? (sorry for the thread hijack!)
