my best guess is its a brace to reduce the chance of the driver getting a facefull of steering wheel in the event of a frontal. but the steering columns nowadays are collapsible.

I'm assuming the original Locost (that used Mk2 Escort) didn't have that luxury - hence the support. Not sure about the sierra, but the MX5 defiantly has one, so no need for it.

Makes the car that little bit lighter!
