Default Scrap yards!

Is it just me or have scrap yards become a past time.
In my area there used to be around 8-9 decent scrap yards where you could go wander around loaded with a toolbox and get stuck into a car covered in crap and all kinds to get whatever you wanted, then off to negotiate at reasonable cost. A pain at the time but actually quite satisfying looking back.
Nowadays we have 2-3 scrappies who in simple terms just take the p***. I guess the likes of the Internet killed the trade but i am often impatient and if I need a part would like to have it yesterday....

I went to what I though was the best scrap yard left looking for some steel wheels to get my roadster rolling, expecting around £20 or so for 4 wheels with crap tyres. The guys running the place was a complete tool, half arsed, no banter what so ever, and after finding 4 wheels scattered at each corner of the place he was wanting £70!. I don't mind supporting the place a little but at that price I told him do one.

Gone are the days....

Same here. My local looks like a supermarket and milks you just the same.

the one I remember fondly that dictated you go digging around looking in the dark corners amongst precariously stacked cars has gone. The Internet and health and safety ended that.

Totally agree....many an hour spent climbing up into cars stacked up and taking chunks out of knuckles trying in vain to undo rusted bolts!!!

Search normally ended with a shout to the guy in the forklift of "ow much??"

Good times 😊

It's even worse when sellers know that builders like us want things hence why you could get a pallet of gold bars for less that an old Sierra steering column now on eBay!!!!

I think that is the advantage of moving towards the mx5 route with regards to the price of parts, there is a whole cars worth of drive it on to the trailer donnor on ebay for £110 or best offer thats been there for the past 4 weeks. Non of the fuss of selling on the unwanted bits just bin the tin that you don't want.

yep spent many gr8 afternoons getting upgrades and parts. Have not been to our local in 8 years probably it was ( hopefully still is ) a proper yard.

I remember once wandering round the BMW isle when a TORRENTIAL ran burst errupted. Me and my brother in law jumped in the clossest thing to us. An E21 320 Baur Convertable with a very leakey roof

TT
