![]() Hello Everyone and yes I am a newbie(I belive that is the term).
Background is, bought the original book many years ago, couldnt find a Mk1 Escort so found a DOHC sierra for £25. Then did the usual i.e got married bought a house with no garage and had kids. Then bought the new book which brilliantly is based on the sierra......the story goes on and on. Anyway I now have the book, the donor and the space and i belive the time although the wife might not agree on the last point. Next stage welding!!! i did a bit of arc welding many years ago but believe that MIG is the thing now and that i need something like the Clarke 151e? I know that i am new but could i ask if anyone has or knows of a decent 2nd hand MiG welder that I could buy? Also anyone got any spare steel that I can abuse whilst i practice? By the way i am based in Mirfield West Yorks, its near Leeds. All advice, help V gratefully apprectiated. |

![]() Welcome to the forum
![]() Sounds like you got the bug the same way as me .... Delighted when I found the new Chris Gibbs book. Ebay can sometimes turn up trumphs This site is well worth a visit Mig welding forum A goldmine of information & not a bad place to find a used Mig welder ![]() I have plenty of scrap steel but it will cost a blooming fortune to send it up to you ![]() Why not pop into your local steel stockists & have a root about in the scrap bins. Enjoy your build ![]()

![]() You don't have to use mig, I did mine entirely with arc. I used a 200 amp inverter turned down to between 85 and 130 amps depending on what I was doing. You get superb penetration with arc and incredibly strong joints.

![]() ![]() I always try to be "helpfulhandyandy" to all forum members, you are very welcome to visit, just get in touch when time is right for you. The Clarke Mig..... Its ok for the money, plus it was my first ever Mig so hadn,t any previous knowledge of other machines before I got it, It certainly does the job of building a chassis & even manages the thicker plate work( diff brackets etc). Since I started welding I,ve used other machines that cost a great deal more, & yes being totally honest you can see/tell the difference in performance but at a reasonable budget for the "Home Hobby Welder" ( that will weld the chassis ) its a very good little machine, mines a little qwerky at times but is getting on abit now ![]() cheers andy |

![]() Hi Andy,
Cheers for that, good news i have got a Clarke 151 TE Turbo off ebay with rest of gear for £100 almost new (well thats what it says) Also bumped into an old mate who just happens to be a metal worker now and says he can get us the steel and will cut if for free and also give us a bit of a welding lesson. Good lad in my books. Did i read somewhere that you have a cut list? If so could i have a copy please. Best of all though the build should be starting in the next week or two. Cheers for the advice so far. FC |
